The city is surrounded on all sides by densely overgrown with hills and five mountains, the highest of which is Mount Treskavika with a height of 2088 meters. The other four mountains are slightly inferior in height to Treskavik and are also known as the Olympic Mountains of Sarajevo. The capital of Bosnia has a temperate continental climate, characterized by not very cold winters and not so hot summers. The temperature in January is on average -1 degrees, and in July about +19 degrees. The climatic conditions of the region contribute well to the development of winter sports. For example, the 1984 Winter Olympics were held in Sarajevo.

As already mentioned, the city was founded in 1263. At that time he was called Vrhbosna. From the 15th to the 19th centuries, it was part of the Ottoman Empire and first had the name Bosna Saray, after which it was renamed Saray Ova. In the late XIX - early XX centuries, Sarajevo was ruled by Austria-Hungary. In 1914, a significant historical event took place here: the heir to the throne of Austria, Franz Ferdinand, was killed by members of Mlad Bosn, which was one of the reasons that led to the outbreak of the First World War.

Between 1992 and 1995 the capital of Bosnia was under siege by the Bosnian Serbs during the civil war .

Sarajevo capital

The most economically developed region of the country is Sarajevo. The capital of Bosnia mainly specializes in the areas of industry and tourism. There are enterprises in the textile, food, pharmaceutical, automotive and metal industries.

The location of Sarajevo in a valley surrounded by mountains makes the city very compact and does not allow the possibility of expanding its area. This cannot but affect the transport situation. Car traffic is very limited due to narrow city streets and a shortage of parking spaces. But this situation allows pedestrians and cyclists to feel more at ease. A trans-European highway passes through Sarajevo, connecting it with Budapest and Ploce. There are also railways passing through the city.

Educational institutions in Sarajevo deserve special mention. The oldest of them was discovered back in 1531 and is a school of Sufism philosophy. Also in the city there are several universities and primary and secondary schools.
