How to knit two-color patterns with knitting needles: patterns and description

Over time, almost all craftswomen have small balls of yarn from finished products. As a rule, they are all of different colors and compositions, it is a pity to throw them out, but they are not enough for the whole product. It is such multi-colored balls that can be used for multi-colored knitting, for example, made using the lazy jacquard technique. Consider two-color patterns with knitting needles, patterns and description for them.

Choose yarn and knitting needles

Two-color patterns can be knitted from absolutely any yarn, both from thick wool and from thin cotton. Two threads do not have to be of the same brand and composition, but the thickness should be approximately the same. If you are not sure how the knitted fabric will behave in the future, tie a sample, wash and dry it. So it will become clear whether one of the threads sheds, and also whether the canvas will stretch or, conversely, will not shrink.

To knit two-color patterns with knitting needles (schemes and description will be given later), select those knitting needles that are suitable for yarn in size. If you need a very dense windproof product, then you can take the needles one size smaller, if you want a looser fabric, then take the tool a size larger, only then don’t knit too loosely. Otherwise, broaches may be visible on the front.

Lazy jacquard

Two-color knitting can be done with lazy jacquard. This does not mean at all that you don’t need to make an effort, just, unlike a regular jacquard, lazy is a little easier to perform, there are no long broaches in the work, and the scheme is cyclical.

Such patterns are available to beginner needlewomen, since there is no need to control the tension density of broaches, correctly cross them, and also calculate loops for a long time so that a large pattern fits into the product.

The yarn changes every two rows, that is, first the front and back rows are knitted with a thread of one color, the next two - another and so on.

Another feature of lazy jacquard (two-color knitting) is that some loops, based on the scheme, are removed on the right knitting needle without being knitted. At the same time, it is important where the working thread remains - behind the working canvas or behind it. As a rule, in the front rows, the yarn remains behind the work, and in the wrong rows in front of it.

Woven fabric effect

Is it possible to create an imitation of a woven fabric by performing knitting? Two-color patterns (you can find a description of their patterns in our review) may look like fabric, for example, tweed or, in this case, fabric with a relief pattern. This knitting is quite dense and inelastic, consider this when choosing a model. Such knitting is suitable for products that should hold their shape well, for example, a knitted jacket or a skirt according to the figure.

In order to bind the sample, you need to dial an even number of loops, plus two hem and plus two for the symmetry of the pattern. Type, for example, 12 loops.

  • Let's start work with blue yarn. Knit the first and second rows with front stitch.
  • In the third row, we go to the orange thread and knit in this way: the first loop is front, then we change the next four on the right knitting needle and leave the thread in front of the fabric, the next four are knitted again, we change the next one loop without knitting, the thread, as before in front of the canvas.
  • In the fourth, we again switch to blue yarn. We knit the first four loops on the wrong side, remove the next 4 on the right knitting needle, yarn in front of the canvas, and the next two loops on the wrong side.
  • The fifth row continues to knit with orange thread. Three facial, four remove, yarn in front of the canvas, three facial.
  • In the sixth row, two purl, four removed, the yarn remains behind the fabric, four purl.
  • The seventh row (orange yarn) we begin with the fact that we remove one loop, the yarn before knitting, four front, four remove, one front.
  • In the eighth, four loops will be removed, the yarn behind the fabric, 4 we will sew on the wrong side, two are removed.
  • The ninth row is knitted with a blue thread. Two facial, four remove, 4 facial.
  • We start the tenth by removing one loop, again four wrong seams, four removed, one wrong seam.
  • We begin the eleventh with four loops removed, then four facial, two we remove.
  • The twelfth begins with three loops removed, four purl, three remove.
  • In the thirteenth, two remove, four facial, 4 remove.
  • In the fourteenth we knit one wrong side, four are removed, four wrong side, one is removed.

Repeat the pattern starting from the third row.

For the sample, dial an odd number of loops.

  • The first row begins with the yarn of the main color. We make a crochet, remove the next loop on the right knitting needle, then one wrong side. We continue to alternate until the end.
  • In the second row we change the yarn to a contrasting color and knit the wrong one, then we remove the yarn from the previous row on the right knitting needle, and leave the yarn in front of the working canvas. Thus we alternate to the edge.
  • The third row is knitted with a thread of the first color. We make a crochet, remove one loop on the right knitting needle, next two stitches we knit together the front.
  • In the fourth, we change the thread and start with two front ones, the next one is removed on the right knitting needle. Alternate to the end of the row.
  • In the fifth row, we again change the thread, make a crochet, remove the buttonhole, knit the next two together on the wrong side.

The rapport is repeated from the second to the fifth rows.

Jacquard

The most famous two-color patterns with knitting needles, patterns and descriptions of which can be found in any needlework publication, are Norwegian. These are the same snowflakes, Christmas trees and deer that flaunt on winter sweaters, hats and scarves. They are rarely made of three or more colors, they are usually knitted from yarn of two contrasting colors.

The most important thing in such knitting is to carefully follow the pattern, each cell of which is equal to one loop of the fabric. It is better to start doing such a voluminous work if you already have experience in knitting. Here you need to be extremely careful and be able to correctly make all the calculations, so that the figure from the circuit perfectly fits into the future product.

All broaches of the threads pass from the inside out, and on the front side you get a beautiful pattern of eyelets of a contrasting color background. Two-color knitting in jacquard patterns looks very beautiful and stylish.

Another original way to work with two types of colored yarn is colored gum. Two-color patterns with knitting needles (patterns and description of gums of such a plan, by the way, are very diverse) begin with a set of an odd number of stitches in one color. Further, 1 PL is knitted with the same thread, yarn, one loop is removed.

  • In the second row, a yarn is already made with a thread of a different color, one is removed, the next two together.
  • The third row begins to knit from the opposite end of the knitting needles (for such knitting, take straight non-circular knitting needles). Tie the two together, double crochet, remove one.
  • In the fourth row, go to another yarn and make a crochet, remove one, two together seamy.
  • In the fifth row, change the thread and the end of the knitting needle again. Two together, double crochet, one take off.

Repeat from the second row.

Knitting in a circle

Knitting (two-color patterns in this case) can be done in a circle. So the product is obtained without seams, which is very convenient, for example, for knitting hats or sweaters with raglan sleeves. Jacquard can also be knitted on circular knitting needles, but for this you need to look a little differently at the pattern. Read it only in one direction - from right to left.

If you have a lazy jacquard, then all broaches should be on the wrong side.
