Gardeners enthusiastically engaged in grape cultivation, probably know the name of the Russian breeder A.V. Bourdak. They have bred a lot of interesting hybrid varieties of this berry, they include the still little-known, but already popular among gardeners, Sicily grapes.
Grade Features
It is characterized as a table, since the berry is great for cooking culinary dishes and homemade wine.
Sicily grape variety is resistant to many diseases, including fungal, oidium, white rot.
While it is being tested and is actively grown in the southern regions of Russia, as it withstands frosts down to -23 degrees. Distinctive features of Sicily grapes can be called the following:
- forms a rapidly growing bush with a powerful rhizome;
- large clusters of cylindrical shape appear in large numbers, ripen in about mid-August (115-125 days), have a weight of from 0.800 to 1.5 kg;
- light yellow elongated berries - large, up to 6 cm, with crispy sweet flesh (although a slight sourness is still felt), a pronounced taste of muscat, with one or two seeds and a dense skin.
Grape care
Sicily is not particularly demanding on the conditions of planting and care. However, a few rules for obtaining high annual yields should still be followed.
- When planting, exclude clay soil, as well as with a high salt content.
- Shading is optional - Sicily feels great under the sun.
- This grape loves moisture, and therefore you need to constantly monitor the condition of the soil even in a temperate climate.
- During the period of tying the clusters, it is recommended that they be rationed, which will ultimately increase productivity.
- Autumn pruning of fruiting lashes is necessary.
Possessing excellent taste, Sicily grapes are well transported and look great on the festive table, so it has all the prospects in the near future to become quite popular among both professionals and amateur gardeners.
