Wall waterproofing: materials and technology

Waterproofing the walls is a simple job, albeit quite laborious. The main thing is to know all the secrets and pitfalls, then you can reliably protect any surface from the effects of water, which will ensure its safety and long life.

Wall waterproofing materials

Materials that protect the walls from water are divided in form into:

  • mastics;
  • powders;
  • solutions;
  • sheet and roll material;
  • films and polymeric membranes;
  • others.

Material is selected depending on the initial conditions and financial capabilities. The most affordable method of waterproofing is plastering with a modified cement mixture in three layers.

Types of waterproofing

Depending on the type of action of the material, wall waterproofing is:

  • prefabricated (mounted from waterproofing sheets or film);
  • impregnating (used for porous surfaces);
    waterproofing wooden walls
  • cast (bitumen-rubber base or polymer is heated, filled with gaps or make one even layer);
  • filling (hydrophobic powders are used for it);
  • injectable or penetrating.

Structurally, waterproofing can be single-layer or multi-layer, whether or not ventilated, reinforced or not, with or without a protective layer.

The type of protection against exposure to water is selected according to the initial conditions and requirements, depending on the type of room and its design features.

Waterproofing of wooden walls

Wooden walls must be protected from moisture, otherwise they will rot and collapse very quickly. Wood fibers absorb water like a sponge, and in such a favorable environment, fungi and mold actively develop.

waterproofing the walls in the bathroom

The waterproofing of the walls of a wooden house is divided into internal and external. The latter is most important to ensure the safety of the walls, so they pay special attention to it. The type of external insulation will depend on the design of the house. For example, if it was decided to leave the facade of the house wooden, you can treat it with antiseptics, flame retardants, findicides and special coating treatment. And in the case when the facade is sheathed with siding, multilayer protection is laid between the external panels and the wooden walls, which provides heat and waterproofing.

Waterproofing the walls in the bathroom

The bathroom has a special microclimate - there is almost always high air temperature and humidity. Constant vaporization negatively affects the walls and floor: fungus, mold is formed, moisture literally permeates the walls through, which, naturally, affects them not in the best way. That is why waterproofing the walls of the bathroom seems to be the most reasonable step.

The most convenient are bitumen-polymer materials in rolls with a special adhesive base. There is a drawback of this method - it is necessary to carefully prepare the surface, level it and grind.

And the last one. Waterproofing will be effective only if it is continuous. It is not enough to provide protection from water, most often you still need to protect the floor and foundation of the room, only then your home will not suffer from the effects of water and steam.
