Volcanic bomb: description photo, origin

Volcanoes are geological formations on the earth's crust. From them magma escapes to the earth's surface, forming lava, volcanic gases, as well as mixtures of gas, stones and volcanic ash. Such mixtures are called pyroclastic flows.

It should be noted that the word "volcano" came from Ancient Rome, where the god of fire was called by this name.

A lot of interesting things are known about these natural phenomena, and in the article you can find some real facts about them, among which are information about volcanic bombs (see photo in the article).

General information

The lands that extend at the foot of volcanoes are quite fertile. And all this is due to the fact that the eruptions produced by the vent of the volcano saturate the soil of the surroundings with a large amount of minerals and nutrients. Even in the case of a sleeping volcano, the wind blowing around it carries substances important for the soil in different directions. That is why people settle even on the slopes of the mountains, not paying attention to the emerging tremors from the bowels.

And all this is completely in vain. Many people know about the sad fate of the inhabitants of Pompeii, who died during the monstrous eruption of Vesuvius, which occurred about 2000 years ago. This tragedy could have been avoided if attention had been paid to the increasing earthquakes in this region.

Huge volcanic bomb

What are volcanic bombs called?

This is a piece or piece of lava thrown from the vent during the eruption of a volcano. It is in a plastic or liquid state, which has received a specific shape during squeezing and solidification during the flight through the air.

All solid eruption products are usually thrown out of the bowels in the form of ashes and various pieces. Small fragments are called lapilli, and larger fragments are called volcanic bombs.

A variety of bomb shapes

Description

In their form, these fragments can be different. It all depends on the composition, flight conditions and viscosity of the lava. Thanks to the rotation of the lump in flight, it can acquire a fusiform or twisted shape.

Due to the plastic consistency, they often change shape during flight or when they hit the surface of the earth. Liquid lavas that do not have time to cool in the air, in the process of hitting the ground, take the form of crust, and low-viscosity mixtures (basaltic), due to rotation in flight, acquire a pear-shaped form. More viscous masses become rounded in shape.

Volcanic bomb

As for the internal contents of a volcanic bomb, it can be bubbly or porous. The outer crust, due to rapid cooling in the air, becomes glassy and dense.

In diameter, such a bomb can reach 7 meters, but in most cases it does not exceed a few centimeters. At the time of a volcano explosion, bombs sometimes weighing up to several tons fly out of the crater. They can be found on the slopes of any volcanoes.

Recent incident

Not so long ago, 23 people were injured in Hawaii as a result of a volcanic bomb entering a ship with tourists. Such a terrifying incident happened near the Kilauea volcano, the eruption of which began in early May.

Reports say that a ship owned by the Lava Ocean Tours travel company was damaged by volcanic lava. This happened at six in the morning near the Kilauea volcano. It is not known exactly how far the ship was, however it suffered rather severe damage: the ship has a broken roof, molten lining and damaged railings.

Finally

Fire-breathing mountains arise above the places where lithospheric plates collide. This happens in the weakest places of the earth’s crust, through which the planet from its bowels throws hot magma, volcanic bombs, combustible gases and other red-hot material onto the earth’s surface. All these masses form the majority of the mountains.

The word "volcano" is of Latin origin. As noted above, in ancient Rome the so-called god of fire. An interesting fact is that the first such name was Mount Etna. According to the residents of this area, it was there that the forge of the Volcano was located.
