Not many cities in Russia can boast of botanical gardens, but in Belgorod it is a fairly large center. Moreover, he was formed under the patronage of the National Research University "BelSU" and with the active participation of the Ministry of Education and Science. This contributes to its successful development for the second decade.
History of education
A botanical garden was created in Belgorod in 1999, thanks to the initiative of the then governor. At the same time, a plot of just over 70 hectares was made up, consisting of lands of various categories. These were fields, rather fertile, having a significant layer of black soil, and pastures, and plots already occupied by plantations, mainly wild plants.
In the first year, a draft of the main sections of the garden was developed, after which they started clearing the territory. After all, about two hectares were occupied by a household waste dump with a rather deep bedding. The rest of the site also required reclamation. This work took almost 3 years, after which, finally, it was possible to begin the main work on the creation of a botanical garden in Belgorod.
Structural sections
The whole territory was divided into sectors specializing both in certain plants and in types of exploration activities. These include:
- Nursery engaged in breeding and plant propagation.
- Arboretum. This department not only contains a rather large collection of plants, but also tries to “accustom” many of them to live in unusual climatic conditions.
- Sector of cultural and ornamental plants. It united the previously existing departments of steppe vegetation, horticulture, viticulture and berry, medicinal and forage grasses, greenhouses, rare species from the Red Book.
- Research lab.
In fact, the Botanical Garden in Belgorod is an open-air museum that allows you to see many natural objects, including unique, rare and endangered.
On the basis of the garden a lot of scientific research and research is carried out. Since 2013, he received the status of uniqueness. Today it is one of the few objects of this kind, actively working and continuing to increase the collection.

To date, the garden collection has more than 2.5 thousand species and varieties of flora. These are not only plants growing in Russia. Many of them arrived in the park from afar. For several years now, as a small stage in the garden becomes the venue for the annual concert season of the city philharmonic. The action, called "Accidental Encounters", gathers quite a lot of interested public. The event takes place over several days of July. You should ask about his plan in advance on the official website of the Philharmonic. These are not only exclusively instrumental concerts. Dancing groups and singers are entering the stage.
For almost a month, among the unique and beautiful plants, equally magnificent music sounds. At the same time, visitors can freely walk in the park. Many come as whole families, taking sandwiches and thermoses with them.
