The date of establishment of official diplomatic relations between Turkey and Russia is considered to be 1701. However, relations at the state level have been carried out since at least 1492, and modern relations began in 1992 after the signing of the Treaty on the Basics of Relations.

Relationship history

Since the beginning of official relations, tension has arisen between the two countries, which subsequently resulted in repeated direct armed clashes and full-scale wars. However, after the October Revolution, relations between the young Soviet Republic and Turkey improved for a short period of time, as Moscow provided significant support to Ataturk and even transferred vast territories to the Caucasus.

But the friendship of the two countries was not long. Fearing the spread of communism, Turkish authorities banned the Communist Party in the country. Even the large loans that the Soviet government provided Turkey for the construction of textile factories did not save.

The Turkish embassy in Moscow has always been a place of lively negotiations, since the Turkish Republic is one of the key states in the Mediterranean region and a fierce struggle has been waged between the capitalist and socialist camps for influence.

After 1991, relations between Turkey and Russia began to improve steadily. Perhaps this was due to the lack of a common border between the two states and a decrease, in connection with this, the number of reasons for conflict.

The Embassy of the Republic of Turkey in Moscow aims to deepen bilateral cooperation, build confidence and develop economic, cultural and political cooperation between the two countries. For each of these areas in the structure of the embassy there is a special department.

Today, the Turkish ambassador to Russia is Mr. Lazip Dirioz. According to him, between the two countries all the reasons for mistrust were eliminated, and the positions on the main world and regional issues are extremely similar. At the same time, on issues where there are differences of positions, an honest and direct dialogue has been established.

Despite the fact that since 2000, relations have been steadily developing, in 2015 there was a crisis caused by the fact that a Turkish pilot shot down a Russian plane over Syrian territory. After a year and a half of tense relations and an almost complete lack of dialogue, the two countries managed to re-establish relations and begin cooperation on a number of important issues, including international ones.
