Fashion History: Gothic Clothing

Today, the Gothic style in clothing is associated exclusively with representatives of the same informal trend. But in reality, this view is erroneous. The history of this trend begins in France XII - XIV centuries. At this time, there is a transition from wide hoodies to tight silhouettes.

For the first time, the Gothic style of clothing manifested itself in knightly armor. Heavy chain mail began to be replaced by a lighter, but no less durable ammunition made of steel. The outfits of ordinary city dwellers began to change. Men's suits were shortened, and women's dresses began to be clearly divided into a skirt and bodice. Deep cuts appeared both in front and behind, elongated sleeves with cuffs pointed downwards. โ€œAngularityโ€ was acquired by stand-up collars, hats, boots with outstretched toes. Of fabrics, velvet of bright colors was preferred, only later did the colors become much darker.

Male Gothic style in the clothes of the Middle Ages assumed the presence of two obligatory costumes. One had a long and loose cut, the second was short and narrow. The latter were especially popular among the youth of those years. At the beginning of the 14th century, short purple jackets are in fashion. You could recognize them by the sleeves hanging almost to the floor. They wore such a jacket, usually with stockings.

Representatives of the nobility have a Gothic style in clothes represented by a narrow cotardi caftan and a blio jacket with wide floors. The cloak-amber consisted of a piece of fabric with an opening for the head, without sleeves and side seams. If slots for hands were made in it or sleeves were sewn, then it was called surco.

The female Gothic style in clothes was characterized by outfits of a kamiz and kott with a wide skirt and a tight-fitting top. Her plume spoke about the status of the lady in society: the longer he was, the more noble was his possessor. The main girlโ€™s headdress is a cap with a cut in the parietal zone, resembling a curved tube made of tissue in shape.

Gothic clothing style received a new round of development at the end of the 20th century. In the late seventies, the rebellion of young men and women gave way to a decadent mood. The first Goths were very similar to punks: colors, accessories, hairstyles. But everything began to change with the appearance of neo-Gothic groups on the music scene. The formation of modern subculture was also influenced by such a phenomenon as sadomasochism.

From here originate leather outfits, spikes and other metal fittings.

Modern Gothic style has undergone some more changes. So there were corporate goths working in the office and observing the business dress code. In addition to the above, there are antique, Victorian, romantic, Renaissance Goths, recreating images from historical eras. Cyber โ€‹โ€‹Goths are distinguished by the presence of acid flowers in dresses and the presence of technological design. Androgynous Goths try to hide their true gender behind cosmetics and clothing.

Far from the classic look of glitter and fairy-goths, which can only be girls. They recolor hair in bright colors uncharacteristic for this current , make dreadlocks and braid pigtails. But perhaps the rarest phenomenon of this subculture is the Western Goths. The name speaks for itself: the outfits of these guys painfully resemble the clothes of cowboys, and a wide-brimmed hat, a revolver and a whip are favorite accessories.
