Speaking of the game, we mean a materially expressed “battle” of two rivals, deceit, pretense, risk, etc.
F.M. writes about the hero who put the game at the heart of his life Dostoevsky. The “Player” is one of his five novels, in the center of which is an ideological hero. Alexei Ivanovich, in love with a young girl Polina, wins money in intellect to help her. Since then, the game has become his mania. He put all his strength, all his dreams, intentions on the altar of the game. About this writes Dostoevsky. The player of Dostoevsky is not just cowardly, weak-willed, he is a kind of poet. He is even ashamed of the fact that he is engaged in the game, but at the same time he feels almost like a hero, because he takes risks all the time.
The psychologism of Dostoevsky, as well as in his other novels, is a break of the soul, internal monologues, details and symbols. The writer succeeds in surprisingly vividly and graphically depicting the experiences and state of mind of his hero. And this is no coincidence. For the whole ten years, Fedor Mikhailovich himself was fond of roulette, he lost everything to the penny. And again he went to the gambling house. All this time he was just a player, but an experimental psychologist studying himself and others. Everyone knew that Dostoevsky was a player, but he was able to defeat this addiction in himself. The novel reveals the psychology and philosophy of the game. Of course, largely due to the style of the writer. The language of the work, polyphony, a huge number of heroes - these are the characteristic features of the novel "The Player". Dostoevsky (the summary can still not fully convey this) creates a special world, plunging into which you begin to actively experience and sympathize with the hero.
And what do we see in the summary? Alexei Ivanovich, a young teacher, lives in a fictional city in the family of his wards. He is very in love with the stepdaughter of the owner of the house, Polina. But she does not reciprocate. Between them, strange relationships are formed. which can hardly be called friendship. Polina treats Alexei arrogantly and arrogantly. In the end, he understands that to achieve its location can only be with the help of money. The girl’s family’s hopes for her grandmother’s death and her inheritance were scattered, as a result of which Polina broke up with her fiancé De Grieux, who had Polina’s stepfather in debt. Alex wants to earn money for his beloved. He goes to the gambling house, he is lucky, but Polina does not take the money. After a lapse of time, when the hero has already gone all out, he learns from a friend that Polina loves him. Alex wants to resurrect in this love, but the game has completely taken possession of him.
Dostoevsky’s novel “The Player” is not so much social, that is, showing the detrimental influence of gambling houses, as much as philosophical, conceptual.
