There is hardly a person who has not heard of libido. However, there is another force inherent in people. And she is no less powerful. The consequences of its manifestation can be the most devastating. It's about energy called mortido.
The contrast of two forces
According to the theory of psychoanalysis, two main forces rule the ball in a person’s life. This is mortido and libido. These motives are fundamental. Libido is always experienced as something pleasant, and mortido is perceived as pain, a potential danger to humans. Mortido is something that instills fear. This energy, according to Freud, originates in the death instinct inherent in every person. And the source of libido is the desire for life. Freud's libido and mortido are complementary forces. One cannot exist without the other. The peak manifestation of the craving for life is intimacy; and as for the most powerful manifestation of mortido, this is murder.
Libido is creative energy, while mortido is a manifestation of aggression. Sometimes you can find other names for mortido - thanatos. It is believed that the desire for development and destruction is observed even at the physiological level. For example, a cell tends to multiply, but when it divides, it actually ceases to exist.
Possible directivity of mortido
Mortido is energy that is sent to creation by sublimation, if we are talking about a highly developed personality. If the individual is not sufficiently developed, then this force is directed against him. He begins to destroy himself psychologically, and then psychosomatics may arise. Mortido is a destructive force. It has the opposite meaning of libido. If we are talking about the direction of energy outside - this is anger, irritation, aggression, the desire to destroy everything around. If a person redirects this energy into a transformational channel, then this is a strong desire to achieve a high goal, sublimation into great things.
How does mortido work when mismanaged
From the point of view of psychologists, a mortido pushes a person into two types of crimes - in relation to himself and to others. The inability to cope with one’s own feelings causes a person to have conflicts, anger, a desire to oppose himself to the whole world. From the point of view of a crime in relation to himself, this is intoxication with negative feelings, manifestations associated with sadomasochism.
Out of all this, a person’s desire is born to do the opposite, contrary to the current situation. The meaning of human life is a constant struggle. He is interested in conflict for the sake of conflict, and this is very sad. Indeed, in this way people destroy themselves, their body. Oncological diseases are often motivated by the inept handling of their own emotions. Instead of turning unpleasant experiences into music, poems or pictures, a person torments himself with unpleasant emotions. This cannot but affect the body.
Anger is so overwhelming such people that they become prone to sudden mood swings. Today they flutter with happiness, but tomorrow they are ready to destroy the whole world. Outbreaks of anger become frequent. Any little thing can lead to a person who is mistreating the energy of mortido. This leads to disastrous consequences in terms of socialization. A person can go into a binge, using protest trying to prove that he wants to find his happiness.
Cathexis
Also, for a better understanding of what mortido is, it is necessary to consider the concept of cathexis. This word refers to the direction of attraction. For example, if a person falls in love, it means that he has cathected his attraction into his chosen object. In other words, cathexis is the distribution of energy of attraction.
Psychologists believe that a person has a need to catect not only libido, but also mortido. This suggests the following: people not only long for loving and being loved; perhaps we have a need for hatred and hatred.
Destructive force
At least this is the opinion of psychoanalysts. After all, if a person does not project his mortido onto other people, then it begins to destroy him. In psychotherapy, such cases are frequent. A person divorces a spouse who has terrorized him for a long time, or moves away from autocratic parents. It would seem that now a pleasant and free life should begin. However, such clients began to hurt and degrade as individuals. As the object that hated them disappeared, the mortido energy began to destroy them.
That is why in psychotherapy clients are taught to cope with their emotions, redirect them to the mainstream of creativity. Art therapy occupies an important place in psychology. Mortido is energy that is most easily expressed in the form of images, music, and dance. Then there will be no need to cast evil on others. Turning to creativity, a person ceases to destroy himself.
Another interpretation of mortido
There is another interesting feature related to mortido. Freud believed that this energy can not only make physical death attractive to a person. The transition of a person to a form of existence after death for the unconscious is equivalent to existence before birth. Both the first and the second are non-existence. Life before birth and life after death are events of the same order. And therefore, the desire to merge with the mother into one whole, metaphorically return to a blissful state before birth, which in psychoanalysis is called regression, can be regarded as a mortido.
