Currently, Kazakhstan has its official institutions in many political and economic centers of Russia: an embassy in Moscow, a consulate general in St. Petersburg, consulates in Omsk, Astrakhan, Kazan and Tyumen.
On October 25, 2004, the Consulate General of Kazakhstan in St. Petersburg was opened. By that time, Astana already had two diplomatic missions - an embassy in Moscow and a consulate in Astrakhan. The Governor of the cultural capital of Russia, Valentina Matvienko, organized a reception in honor of this event. The opening of the institution fell on one of the days, during which specific events are held in the framework of strengthening interstate ties.

The upcoming opening was announced back in 2003, when Russian Prime Minister Kasyanov signed a decree containing information on the need to lease or purchase real estate for the functioning of the consulate general. Since August 1, 2018, the building is located at 10 Ryleeva Street.

Citizens of Kazakhstan who are located in the city or the Leningrad region, as well as in the Republic of Karelia or in the northern and western regions of the Russian Federation, may apply to the second capital of the Russian Federation to resolve their issues. Reception hours: from 9:30 to 12:30 on the following days: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday. It is possible to receive the requested papers after lunch, from 16:00 to 17:00.
The consulate resolves issues related to citizenship with official papers of citizens of Kazakhstan, draws up documents on the movement of citizens of the Republic. He has the authority to request documentation from his country. Also, the Consulate General of Kazakhstan in St. Petersburg is authorized to conduct business related to obtaining visas for those wishing to enter the territory of Kazakhstan.
