All generations of gamers are familiar with the game about the plumbers of the Mario brothers saving the princess. And it seems to many that the youngest of them, Luigi, will constantly live in the shadow of his older brother. His path can be observed from the very first appearance in the role of a secondary hero of the game. Luigi's character is an absolute copy of Mario, but with a completely inverted color scheme. Other distinctive features are completely absent. Even in the case when he played a major role in the commercial for the game for home consoles, it was only confirmed that the character has a very timid nature.
Back in the background
The next major game project, in which the younger brother was present, was the “Super Mario Brothers”. In it, he went into the shadows even deeper than before. As in the last part, he was only a minor character and did not even take part in adventures with Mario. Rather, the situation was such that the character of Luigi had his own mission - to save the poor princess of the Mushroom Country, but only if the older brother failed. And then, when the player managing Mario is very agile and has been playing for a long time, then it simply doesn’t reach Luigi.
Out of the shadows
After the continuation of the game series came out, Luigi finally became more successful, as the development company decided to turn the youngest of the plumber brothers into a full-fledged character. The Japanese version of the Super Mario 2 Brothers game did not have a two-player mode. But there was a choice between Mario and Luigi. The character, the eldest of the brothers, did not differ much from his old prototypes, and the youngest was endowed with a very strong leap. This ability allowed him to fall into places that Mario had never even dreamed of. True, you need to pay for everything. And it touched the management of Luigi. It was more complicated than for Mario, it was very difficult to stop after overclocking, and narrow platforms, as well as collisions with minor enemies, fraught with a decent threat.
New look
The game version for the American continent gave Luigi further stages of development. Here, as before, he was endowed with an amazing leap, which is much stronger than that of the princess herself. But many did not pay attention to it, because the princess had the additional ability to soar in the air. But Luigi had something to brag about, as his personality appeared in his appearance. This did not happen right away. In the promotional pictures, he was depicted differently, but in the games themselves there was no new appearance yet. In all projects, he looked exactly like his older brother - Mario, only in a green suit.
A new game came out, but in the RPG adventure genre. There seemed to be every chance for Luigi to show off. But where is it! Instead, only the very last scene where he was at the head of the parade indicated the existence of the character. It was only a few seconds. And that’s all. Another confirmation of his presence in the game was a desire that was made on Star Hill. And it fully reflected the essence of the not very pleasant fate of the youngest of the brothers: he wanted to become as wonderful a plumber as his older brother.
Hope for a Leading Role
Later, at the beginning of the 2000s, the Nintendo company launched a new console without games about brothers. And the next part came out later, after the release of the Game Cube console. Luigi was not at all in it. But then an offshoot came out, where the youngest had already become a full star of the game. Moreover, the character’s name was even bothered to include in the name of the project - Luigi's Mansion.
Even this event did not allow to make the character of Luigi become the main one. Further, he still returned to a secondary position. In one of the games, he helps his older brother in search of the Star, where he gets into trouble, and Mario is forced to save not only the Star, but also Luigi himself. And then, when they give to play for the younger one, then, in the role of an unsuccessful assistant, Luigi's character, surprisingly, acts. It is clear that the developers did not begin to replace his model with another hero, which means that he is only second-rate.
But there is an opinion that the creators can still pay tribute to poor Luigi. The character deserves it. Small projects have already begun to appear, where he is gradually advancing to leading roles in the game. Some major projects come with additions in which only he is the main one, not Mario or anyone else.
Interesting fact: most know that Luigi is a character in the game. But there is another hero with exactly the same name. This is a little yellow car from a popular animated film. Of course, this is Luigi - the character of "Cars". In the cartoon, he sells tires in his store.
