Bourbon roses - a separate varietal category, included in the group of old types of park flowers, which has become the hallmark of the famous French and English gardens. The homeland of these plants is considered the island of Bourbon (formerly Reunion), located in the Indian Ocean, where their original forms were first met at the beginning of the 19th century. The advantages of the species are the ability to form a strong tall bush, almost completely covered with excellent fragrant flowers, and an amazing flowering time. Rosa Luis Odier is a park-bush culture with an ideal flower shape, combining the best qualities of the species. Loved by both experienced gardeners and novice summer residents. With minimal care, it can become a worthy decoration of any corner of the garden space.
Description of roses Louis Odier
The culture is famous for the color of the flowers with a characteristic, imperceptible transition from pale pink shades along the edges of the petals to the densely saturated tones in the center.
The flowers are quite large, cup-shaped, reaching a diameter of 7-10 cm, located on the shoots individually or 4-5 pieces. Often there are so many buds on the stems that the shoots bend under their weight, resembling an exquisite flowering fountain.
The shoots of roses are flexible, graceful and long (up to 2.5 m), densely covered with dull pale green leaves. A feature of the variety is a relatively small number of spikes on the shoots and the spreading of the bush. The crown diameter can reach 1.2 m.
Culture cultivation
Like many bourbon roses, Louis Odyer prefers loamy open, well-ventilated and sunny areas. Culture also feels pretty well in places that are slightly shaded. The best time for planting in temperate latitudes is considered to be spring, but plants planted in August also take root well, as they manage to take root before the onset of cold weather. Seedlings (one or two years old), purchased with a closed root system, are able to successfully take root in the summer.
Landing holes are dug to a depth of 0.5-0.7 m, depending on the size of the root system. Seedlings are prepared by shortening branches and removing leaves. For better survival, a layer of hydrogel is laid at the bottom of the pit, which, while maintaining moisture, will provide the most comfortable conditions. The grafting site should be 10-12 cm deep. After planting, the soil is carefully compacted and the bush is generously watered.
Rose care
High-quality development of a young plant is impossible without intensive top dressing. During the summer season, mineral complex fertilizers are applied 3-4 times using multicomponent compounds dissolved in water in accordance with the instructions for the preparations.
In the spring, to stimulate the growth of the side branches, on which the buds are formed, the plants are treated with any biostimulant.
Rosa Luis Odier requires infrequent, but quite plentiful watering, at least 20-25 liters should go to the bush. Lack of water can cause the plant to freeze in the winter. Stop watering at the end of September.
Crown formation
Pruning is the main procedure needed for rose bushes. Rose Park Louis Odier is no exception. Of course, it can do without pruning, but the bush will quickly thicken, noticeably weaken, and the incredible sophistication of the culture will be lost. The first pruning of the plant is carried out in the third year of life, giving the young culture the opportunity to grow green mass. At the first pruning, the main goal is to create a powerful skeleton by removing weak, dried and incorrectly growing stems.
Formation of the bush in April, with a sharp and clean garden secateurs. The process technology is simple: first remove non-viable, thinned stems, then shoots whose growth direction is wrong. The remaining stems are truncated into several buds, and thin branches that are knocked out of their general shape are shortened to 0.7 m. Shoots formed below the graft site must be pruned under the base.
An old bush that has lost its decorative appearance can be rejuvenated by completely pruning and leaving small stumps. Such pruning stimulates a significant increase in new strong shoots. This method is acceptable with extensive frostbite of the culture.
Slices are made at an angle of 1 cm above a healthy kidney in the direction of its growth. To avoid the spread of diseases, often affecting shoots, the cutting tool used is disinfected in a solution of bleach. It is advisable to do this after removing each stalk. Fresh slices are treated with pharmaceutical greens or garden var.
Diseases of the rose and their prevention
Rosa Luis Odier is susceptible to various diseases, among which are especially common. like black spotting, powdery mildew, rust and gray rot. Preventive measures such as spring spraying of bushes with a solution of copper sulfate or Fundazole will help to avoid the occurrence of such misfortunes.
