Meteora Monasteries
An unusually beautiful place in Greece. The monastery complex is located in the mountains of Thessaly at the top of the cliffs. Its name translates as "hanging in the air." In the X century, the first hermits settled here, and in the XIV century they began to build monasteries. How were these Christian cloisters built at such a height, on steep cliffs? Even modern builders do not have an exact answer to this question. Access to them was deliberately made so difficult. To climb them, long staircases were used, and large networks were used to lift products and other necessary goods.
During the heyday of the commune, 24 monasteries were built. However, many were destroyed over time and plundered. Some ruins are not even left. The process was aggravated by the appearance of stone steps and roads: the peaks became less difficult to access. Today, only six of them remain active - four male and two female. Despite the fact that this is one of the largest centers of Orthodoxy in Greece, the number of monks living here is very small: only three people lived in Megala Meteora (once a large monastery) in 2016. For this reason, the monastery complex gradually loses its religious value and turns into a popular tourist attraction.
