Cork backing: a beautiful floor for a long time

Repair will not be complete without a beautiful and practical floor, the flooring of which requires patience and some knowledge. For example, let's talk about a suitable lining. Among the wide variety of materials, cork substrate stands out. It consists of rolls or sheets of crushed bark, which are laid under the floor covering. On the basis there may be rubberized blotches.

Porous and airy material dampens sound vibrations that occur when walking. For a rubber-cork substrate, a mass of crushed cork and synthetic rubber is pressed. Rubber gives the material increased depreciation and soundproofing properties.

Bitumen-cork flooring is made of kraft paper with bitumen impregnation. In the production process, crushed crumb is poured onto the paper, it is glued to the base. Under the flooring, such a cloth is placed with the paper up. The bottom cork layer will protect the floor from moisture and ventilate it.

Specifications

  • Environmental friendliness - synthetic components are not used in the production process, because the cork contains a binder called suberin.
  • Thermal insulation - cork substrate has low thermal conductivity, which ensures the preservation of heat in the house.
  • Soundproofing - cork absorbs sounds well.
  • Obstruction of fungus and condensation - the floor will be durable.
  • Hypoallergenic and antistatic - natural material does not harm health and does not cause allergies.
  • Alignment of minor irregularities and surface roughness - additional leveling of the floor may not be required.

Usually a cork substrate of 3 mm thickness is used, although manufacturers produce rolls up to 6 mm. The canvas goes in sheets of 2-4 mm.

Stacking

Before laying, the rolls are left for a day for acclimatization. It is also required to level and dry the base. On it put a waterproofing film with an overlap, with an approach to the wall (5 cm). Fasten with adhesive tape. The material is laid without gaps. Then the parts are fastened with a self-adhesive film. The substrate can be laid immediately on wooden boards, but then it should be covered with a layer of chipboard. It is not recommended to fasten the cork with nails.

Bitumen-cork canvas does not require the installation of a waterproofing film.

If the cork substrate has a thickness of 6 mm, then the base can not be leveled, you need to fill the cavities, voids and cracks with an epoxy solution and sand the surface. When working, you should monitor the level of humidity, which should not exceed 5%, and temperature (up to 20 degrees).

cork substrate 3 mm
A substrate with a thickness of 3-4 mm will have cushioning properties that will increase the operational life of the floor (laminate, ceramic tile, parquet). Cork substrate does not fit under linoleum, as it does not bond well with this material. As a result, a displacement or deformation of the surface will appear.

With a cork backing, the floor will be beautiful and durable. This is the best option for both a city apartment and a country house.
