Bypass in the heating system. Battery bypass: photo

During the operation of heating systems, quite often there is a need to install a circulation pump. As a result of this improvement, a bypass is installed in parallel with the pump circuit in the heating system. Before putting it in, you need to know why you need a bypass in the heating system. In addition, this device can be used during repair work.

Bypass and its functions

A pipeline with a shut-off valve or a parallel circuit that connects to the output and input of a pump, radiator, or other device in the system is called a bypass pipe or bypass. In general, bypass in the heating system is a bypass of the working element. In the process of its work, the coolant will cease to flow into the radiator, since it will flow past it.

circulation pump bypass

As a rule, bypass is used to regulate the heat supply in various rooms. When combined with a temperature sensor, it will trigger at the right time. In the case of replacing radiators, the heating system is connected to the boiler or any other source of hot water through the bypass.

Specifications

When installing a bypass in a heating system, it is important to adhere to certain parameters. For example, the throughput should be no less than the pipeline at the inlet. In other words, diameter reduction is unacceptable. But this is only if there is no crane on the bypass itself.

valve bypass

It is important that the installed valves are of the same type, for example, ball valves. Depending on the installation location, the bypass can operate in different modes. Constant mode control is carried out by means of temperature regulators. In addition, it can only function when the heating system is started to ensure quick heating of the radiators.

Varieties

Depending on the heating system in which it is planned to use a bypass pipe, there are several types:

  • Check valve, bypass. A similar scheme is used for circulation pumps and functions periodically when necessary. After starting the pump from excess pressure, the valve opens and passes the coolant. If the pump shuts off, the valve closes automatically. The main thing here is to remember that the valve may fail as a result of rust or scale entering it.
  • Bypass without valve. Thanks to such a device, it is possible to carry out repairs on the site without shutting down the heating system. In addition, the bypass will allow you to connect to the heating system in a room where there were previously no radiators.

Mounting

As mentioned above, when installing a bypass, certain requirements must be observed. The diameter of the bypass pipe should be slightly smaller than the size of the supply and return pipes. As a result, the flow of water, according to the laws of hydraulics, will go along the path of least resistance, bypassing the heater. Install a bypass in the heating system as close as possible to the heater and as far as possible from the riser.

radiator bypass

If you have the tools and some skills, you can collect the bypass yourself or just buy it in a specialized store. When installing a bypass, it is allowed to replace ball valves with more convenient temperature controllers, so that the temperature is controlled automatically. To achieve the maximum effect, a classic ball control valve should be inserted into the middle of the bypass.

Single Bypass System Bypass

In the heating system, the bypass is an ordinary jumper used to control the flow of coolant. It acquires maximum relevance with a single-pipe heating system, where it smoothes out all the shortcomings. Structurally, the bypass circuit is a pipe connection (jumper) that communicates with each other a supply pipe with hot water that enters the heater, with a line exiting the radiator (return pipe).

bypass circuit

Ball valves are placed on the line of the supply pipe to the radiator, on the line of its exit from the heater, as well as on the bypass line. Cranes are necessary for the possible shutdown of the radiator in case of repair or other work on it, without stopping the operation of the heating system, which at this time passes to work through the bypass on the battery, bypassing the device itself.

Bypass on the line of the network pump

The use of bypass in the heating system on the line of the network circulation pump allows the entire system to work both with forced circulation of the coolant and with natural circulation, for example, in the event of an emergency blackout in the house.

If a bypass for the circulation pump is provided on the heating system, then, as a rule, on the main line of the system, a special non-return valve can be installed instead of the ball valve in parallel with the pump. Its normal state is open, in the event of an emergency blackout , it instantly closes, thus, the heating system switches to natural circulation.

Bypass near the boiler

In this case, the bypass is installed next to the boiler - directly on the return pipe of the heating system. It should be installed in the place with the lowest temperature in the system. This arrangement of the return pipe does not allow the radiator, bypass, mains circulation pump to overheat, and also prevents the possible formation of an air plug. Structurally, this bypass is installed on a horizontal plane, while its diameter must correspond to the diameter of the return pipe.

Automatic bypass

Bypasses of this type are activated in the event of a heating system failure, without human intervention. For example, when the mains circulation pump stops functioning, in the event of a sudden shutdown of electric energy, the shut-off devices located on the bypass are closed, the pipeline valve opens, which is located between the outlet and inlet pipes.

As a result, the coolant begins to move along the main line, and the heating system switches to the natural circulation of the liquid. Naturally, in such a situation, it is preferable to use an automatic bypass for the circulation pump.

Bypass Diameter

If by connecting the heater, a bypass of the same diameter as the pipelines of the main line will be used, a coolant with a low intensity will flow into it. In this regard, in this case, a smaller diameter construction is used. For example, when connecting 3/4 "install the bypass pipe 1/2".

Conclusion

Bypass in the heating system, especially when using a mains circulation pump, can be called one of the most important elements. Its installation should be carried out subject to all the rules provided for by the technology.

In modern heating systems, the bypass plays an essential function to ensure their normal operation, which is why its installation must be correct and planned.
