Almost all young mothers, being on maternity leave, necessarily begin to craft something for their children. One of the simplest items of clothing is elasticated pants. The pattern for a boy and a girl is no different, therefore, in this article, some beginners will find some useful tips for themselves.
Taking measurements
Tailoring always starts with taking measurements. For children, standard measurements are usually used that correspond to the child’s height and age. However, if the boy is tall, but thin or, conversely, chubby, it is better to take measurements. In this case, the pattern of pants on an elastic band for the boy will fully correspond to the size of a particular child.
The following measurements will be required:
- waist circumference
- girth of the hips and upper leg;
- length from waist to ankle along the side seam;
- length of a step seam;
- length from the bottom of the leg to the knee along the side and step seam.
To correctly measure the child, elastic bands are tied around the waist and ankle, which serve as markers for measurements.

- Vertically from the bottom, the length from the ankle to the knee recedes and an additional horizontal line is drawn. Now it remains to draw smooth lines of medium sections. To do this, from the angle outside the rectangle, a bisector is built along the height line of the stepping seam, on which 1.5 cm is measured. Through this point, draw a middle section with a smooth rounding for the front halves.
Refinement of the rear halves of trousers
The back halves of the trousers at the middle section are overestimated by 3-4 cm. First, they put a point, and then draw a line from the beginning of the side seam along the top to the found point.
Again, they return to the bisector and lay 3 cm on it. Also, in the upper left corner, they retreat 3 cm into the rectangle and put the starting point of the middle of the middle seam of the back halves.
A bit about cutting fabric
It is worth noting that the template is built according to the standards of the child without taking into account the increase in free fit and without allowances for the seams. Therefore, when transferring the pattern to the fabric, you will need to add 6 cm to the underside of the leg for the turn and so that the leg is below the ankle. Add 5 cm along the upper cut, if it is planned not to cut the elastic, but a drawstring for it. For the remaining contours, add 1.5-2 cm.
A bit about fabrics
When it comes to sewing clothes for children, the first question arises: which fabric to choose? First of all, it should be pleasant to the body, not cause irritation. It can be natural or synthetic fabrics, such as cotton knitwear, velsoft, fleece, cotton, linen, footer, cooler or velor.
Knitted fabrics and stretch materials are much more comfortable to wear. They do not constrain movements, and, importantly, even the small ability of the canvas to stretch can compensate for minor flaws in the pattern of pants for the boy. Sports models with an elastic band are very easy to manufacture, the main thing is to choose the right fabric and decorate them with patch pockets or fashionable stripes, and no one will even guess that the child has his own pants.
Design Ideas
The pattern of pants on an elastic band for a boy can be with a one-piece collar. If a fabric with plain weaving was chosen as the main fabric, then it is better to make a cutting elastic band from a dense, well-stretchable fabric. To do this, cut out a strip with a length equal to the circumference of the waist and a width of 6-7 cm and sew it to the upper section of the product.
How to make pants on an elastic band for a boy? The pattern can be built with pockets at the side seams. To do this, 4 cm depart from the upper cut on the template and draw the burlap of the pocket by hand.
As a decorative finish, you can use the torn back pockets with old baby jeans. They will be especially well combined with gray fabric and jeans stripes on the sides.
