According to historians, the steles are tombstones, indicating the resting places of the royal persons and military leaders. These monuments have become famous due to their impressive size. The weight of the largest obelisk is five hundred tons, and the height is almost 33 meters.
It is curious, but the material from which it is made is not found in these places. The patterns covering the surface of the stele are very reminiscent of the sketch of a modern skyscraper.
Adds mystery to the Askum obelisks and the fact that not so long ago a huge platform was discovered under them, consisting of basalt slabs. Based on this, scientists have suggested that steles are only part of a huge structure hidden in the bowels of the earth.
Salt Lake Abbe
This amazing pond is located on the border of two African countries: Ethiopia and Djibouti. Its area is more than three hundred square meters, and the depth at some points reaches forty meters.
It is significant that the lake is surrounded by bizarre lime-salt columns, which grew here as the reservoir was shallowed. In some places, the height of towering salt columns reaches fifty meters.
Abbe is fueled by several thermal springs, so the water here is always warm, and the surrounding landscape seems unearthly and attracts many people from all over the world to this attraction of Ethiopia. Church of St. George
