Works by A. Chekhov, summary. "The attacker" Chekhov A.P.

Summary of the works of A.P. Chekhov, written in the early period of his work, makes it possible to understand their plot basis, but somewhat alienates the reader from the ideological intent of the writer. Every detail is important in his stories, therefore, to fully understand the author’s ideological intention is possible only if you read the full version of the text. This also applies to the story “The Intruder,” written in 1885 and consisting practically of dialogue alone.

Meet the hero

In the office, in front of the forensic investigator’s desk, there was a small and skinny, but rather stern man, unshaven and with shaggy, long-washed hair. He was barefoot, dressed in a mottled shirt and torn trousers. So begins his story-sketch Anton Chekhov.

The attacker, the summary of the crime of which becomes clear from the subsequent dialogue with the investigator, is an uneducated peasant Denis Grigoriev. He was noticed by the railroad tracks when he unscrewed the nut on the rails. And now the investigator was trying to get the man out, which forced him to commit such a serious misconduct.

Interrogation: summary

Throughout the conversation, Chekhov’s attacker cannot understand why he was detained. When asked if he unscrewed the nut that was on the table, Grigoriev answered in the affirmative. And then he begins to explain in detail to the investigator that a very good sinker is obtained from it, which you can not do without when catching deep-sea fish. Everyone knows this: both local, Klimovsky, peasants, and gentlemen, for whom they often made seines. Indeed, without a sinker, the nozzle will not go to the bottom - he quite seriously declares. To the words that it is possible to use lead or some other object for this, Denis innocently answers that it is better not to find a nut. It is both heavy and there is a hole. So the conversation between the investigator and the peasant comes to a standstill, since they do not understand each other. This is partly shown by its summary. Chekhov’s attacker is actually convinced that he is not doing anything wrong. So, the watchman detained him in vain.

Murder charge

Against the background of mutual misunderstanding, the reaction of Denis Grigoryev becomes quite natural when he hears that his act could lead to the train crash and the death of many people. "Well, we ... what villains?" he states quite seriously. The peasant believes that nothing will happen from one or two twisted nuts: "How many years have the whole village ... been unscrewed." And then he explains that the Klimov’s men are doing everything wisely: they must leave nuts on the rails. They know how to do it right. Now, if he, Grigoryev, for example, had carried a railroad tie or laid a log on rails, then there really would have been an accident. And then pah-nut.

But the investigator understands from the conversation that this happens constantly in these places. “That's why here the train went off the rails a year ago,” he notes, which again causes Denis sincere bewilderment. “That’s why you are educated,” Grigoryev replies to the investigator’s hunch. And then he asks to punish the watchman, who, without understanding, grabbed him and hit him twice more.

a summary of the works of a p Chekhov

So sums up the conversation - here is given a very brief summary - Chekhov. An “intruder” is a vivid example of what the illiteracy and ignorance of a people can lead to. And also - the accusation against the authorities, allowing the occurrence of such situations in life.

"Should I go?"

This simple phrase fully expresses the state of the peasant, convinced of his innocence. He willingly tells the investigator about the other nuts found in his house: when and with whom he got them. The peasant is not convinced of his guilt and the mention of the investigator about the thousand eighty-first article of the Penal Code and its summary. Chekhov’s attacker (although it’s hard to call it that in fact) really cannot understand why he was detained.

The whole story ends with a news unpleasant for the hero that he is sent to prison. He is again at a loss: "I have no time ... I need to go to the fair." And then he begins to recall possible sins: the arrears (the elder speaks), two siblings (“brother is not defendant for brother”), the deceased master general, in whom he saw his intercessor (“he would have shown you”). So they take away Denis, who did not find the answer to his question. “We must judge skillfully ...”, he concludes his speech.

This is the plot of the story and its summary. Chekhov's “intruder” did not accidentally get the subtitle “sketch”, since only reading it in the original will fully understand the tragedy of the situation described by the author.
