The most famous writers of the 20th century

The past century has gifted humanity with many talented authors. Writers of the 20th century worked in the era of world social upheavals and revolutions, which inevitably found their reflection in their works. Any historical event influenced literature - if you recall, the largest number of military novels was written during the Second World War and in the next 15 years.

The most famous Russian writers of the 20th century are Alexander Solzhenitsyn and Mikhail Bulgakov. Solzhenitsyn revealed to the world the horror of the Soviet camps in his work The Gulag Archipelago, for which he was severely criticized and persecuted in our country. Solzhenitsyn was later deported to Germany, and he lived and worked abroad for a long time. Russian citizenship was returned to him only in 1990 by a special decree of the president, after which he was able to return to his homeland.

It is interesting that in our country the 20th century became the era of writers and poets in exile - Ivan Bunin, Konstantin Balmont, Raisa Bloch and many others were abroad over the years. Mikhail Bulgakov became famous all over the world with the novel “The Master and Margarita” and the novel “The Heart of a Dog”. It is noteworthy that he wrote the novel “The Master and Margarita” for more than 10 years - the basis of the work was created immediately, but editing continued for many years, until the death of the writer. The terminally ill Bulgakov brought the novel to perfection, but did not manage to finish this work, so literary mistakes can be found in the work. And still, the novel “The Master and Margarita” has become perhaps the best work of this genre in the entire 20th century.

20th century writers
Popular English writers of the 20th century are, first of all, the Queen of detective Agatha Christie and the creator of the best anti-utopia "Farmyard" George Orwell. England at all times gave the world literary geniuses, such as William Shakespeare, Herbert Wells, Walter Scott and many others. The past century was no exception, and people in all countries are now reading the books of John Tolkien, Pratchett Terry, John Windom and Arthur Clark.

Russian writers of the 20th century
In general, the writers of the 20th century were not at all like their predecessors - the authors of the 19th century. Literary works became more diverse, and if in the 19th century there were only 3-4 main directions, then in the 20th century there were an order of magnitude more. The stylistic and ideological diversity gave rise to many genres and trends, and the search for a new language gave us a galaxy of thinkers and philosophers, such as Marcel Proust and Franz Kafka.

Russian writers of the 20th century limited themselves mainly to three stylistic trends - realism, modernism and the avant-garde. An interesting phenomenon in Russian literature of the last century was the revival of romanticism in its original form, this fact was most fully reflected in the works of Alexander Green, whose works are literally permeated by ineradicable dreaminess and exoticism.
