Decorative plaster
Before you learn how to apply different ornaments on a layer of decorative plaster, you need to familiarize yourself with this material in more detail. It is a particularly durable coating, which includes certain fillers. For example, pebbles, chips of marble, granite, mica, quartz, wood fiber. Be sure to include polymeric and acrylic substances in the composition of such a solution, they are responsible for the binding functions. Thanks to them, the plaster acquires elasticity and sets after a certain period of time. It is quite enough to apply the ornament to the surface using textured rollers.
Types of plaster
Two main types of decorative plaster can be distinguished:
- Textured. Such a solution forms a relief immediately after application. This is due to the presence of granules in it. According to their size, the mixture is divided into large, medium, small and fine texture.
- Structural. It forms an elastic and smooth layer, for applying relief use rollers for decorative plaster. The color of the solution is predominantly white, tinted by the addition of special dyes.

- The protruding elements are obtained using nozzles with recesses.
- In order to squeeze the ornament on the wall, you need a roller with bulges.
- Brickwork is imitated using a special nozzle with transverse recesses, which are staggered.
- Rubber rollers with a wound tourniquet create a picture of a natural tree.
- A wall roller made of highly compressed coarse fabric or leather imitates marble.
- In order to give plaster the texture of textiles, it is enough to stick a piece of fabric on a rubber nozzle.
How to create complex patterns on the surface of decorative plaster?
The natural ornament on the plastered wall looks very nice. In order to create it, it is enough to use a relief roller and a not very thick solution. It is necessary to apply the mixture in translational movements, observing the chosen direction, which is not recommended to be changed in the future.
Things are much more complicated with complex artistic patterns. Of course, there are rollers for decorative plaster with certain reliefs. However, it is impossible to use the technology described above, since in some places the mixture will be superimposed with a very thick layer, and other areas will be left completely without finishing material. In this case, it is most important to first apply the plaster with a spatula, and only then go through the curly roller. Speed, pressure force and direction of movement should be the same throughout the area. After the first strip, all subsequent ones are carried out end-to-end to the previous one, overlaps and indents are not allowed.
DIY roller
Rollers for textured plaster can be purchased at any hardware store. However, if there is a desire to give the finish a truly individual and unique look, then such a tool can be made independently. For these purposes, a wallpaper rubber roller, a thick tourniquet, strips of rubber or leather (sometimes you can use regular erasers) and glue are perfect.
It is necessary to cut some shape out of leather or other materials described above. Its shape is selected individually. It is necessary to stick figures at a certain distance, so that a distinct relief looms on the surface of the plaster. It is advisable to decorate the edges of the nozzle as equally as possible, so that when working with a roller there is no difference between the sides.
Application of decorative plaster by roller
So, let's get acquainted with the detailed technology of applying ornaments to the surface of the plaster.
- Be sure to remove all the old coating, problem areas are leveled and, if necessary, repaired. And after complete drying, they are primed with a special agent.
- When using two or more colors in the decoration, plaster should be applied in several layers. For example, the first is draft, the second is of a different color, etc.
- For a clear separation of the palette, you can use masking tape.
- During the application of the topcoat, the direction of movement should only be from top to bottom.
- Decorative plaster dries in about 20 minutes. Therefore, it must be imposed in small sections, in order to have time to apply patterns using textured rollers.
- The degree of pressure, speed and direction of movement of the tool should not differ. Otherwise, the whole web may not work out.
- If the convex edges of the pattern are too rough, then they are corrected with a brush or foam rubber.
- After the decorative layer has completely dried with a special mesh, you need to carefully grind the resulting prints.
- Surface painting is carried out after 48 hours.
Other patterns
Rollers for decorative plaster - not the only tool for applying drawings to the surface. For these purposes, you can use a foam sponge, brush, stiff brush, coarse cloth.
- Sponge pattern. The image is soft, without rough transitions, spotty in shape. A sponge with large pores allows you to give the surface a pronounced texture, but with small ones, on the contrary, a smoother one. During drawing the movements should be smooth and blotting. You can combine large and small sponge on one surface. It turns out a deep and original pattern.
- Tissue application. The easiest way. The fabric is attached to the roller, stretched strongly, which allows you to create a characteristic pattern. With this tool you can work with a liquid solution.
- A variety of patterns are applied with a brush.
