Tropical Cyperus: Home Care

From the subtropical forests of the island of Madagascar and mainland Africa, cyperus came to us. Leaving at home for him does not cause any particular difficulties, for this reason many flower growers cannot deny themselves the pleasure of growing this exotic miracle on the windowsill. In vivo, cyperus grows in marshes, not far from rivers. In ancient times, the Egyptians weaved mats and baskets from it, built boats. Rhizomes of some varieties, reminiscent of the taste of almonds, were used in cooking. But most often the plant was used as a raw material for making paper.

In nature, there are more than a dozen varieties of cyperus, its leaves are narrow, wide or even hairy, the color is light or dark green, and there is also two-tone cyperus. Home care requires constant humidity. Under natural conditions, the plant grows near the water itself, often its roots are in a swamp or river, so it grows up to 3 m in height. Indoor specimens most often do not exceed 60 cm, if you create conditions as close to natural as possible, then they rise to 1.5 m.

In a group composition, along with other colors, cyperus looks perfect. Leaving (photos show how a healthy plant should look) consists in preparing a suitable soil, maintaining good lighting, high humidity and regular watering. The plant negatively relates to dry air, since it has high humidity in its homeland. For this reason, it should be sprayed regularly, put a container of water next to the pot. If you do not adhere to such rules, the leaves will very quickly lose their decorativeness, their tips will dry out. In the worst case, the umbrellas will begin to turn yellow and disappear, and then you will have to prune the cyperus under the root.

how to care for cyperus
Home care requires regular watering. The substrate should not be allowed to dry - ciperus can feel fine only in waterlogged soil. In winter, the pan should be filled, and in summer the pot can be put into a container of water. If the house has an artificial reservoir, then the flowerpot with the flower should be placed so that only umbrellas remain on the surface. This, on the one hand, will serve as a spectacular decoration, and on the other, cyperus feels good in such an environment.

Home care involves constant ventilation of the room where the plant is located. In the warm season, the flower can be taken out to the balcony or to the garden, it responds well to fresh air. In summer, cyperus is suitable at a temperature of about 20 ยฐ C, and in winter it can withstand temperatures up to 10 ยฐ C.

The plant does not need frequent transplants; the pot should be replaced if it has grown from the former. A flowerpot is best chosen tall and narrow. Some gardeners, not knowing how to care for cyperus, make serious mistakes, and as a result, the plant loses its decorative effect. Cyperus is very persistent, if its umbrellas are yellowed, they need to be cut to the root, and the flower itself will be restored before the next season.
