What do we need for work?
- Yarn.
- Scissors.
- Pencil.
- Thin cardboard or thick paper.
- Knitting hook (as an assistant).
- Compass, but it can easily be replaced with a cup or glass.
The first thing to do is to make a template for the future pompom. The template is the main element in how to make a pompom from yarn. Circle do a little more than the expected pompom, excess cut off. Take the cardboard and draw a circle with a pair of compasses, and inside it is much smaller in diameter. If there is no compass, use improvised objects: cups, jars, and glasses. Cut along the contour first the outer (large) circle, and then the inner circle - the middle. You should get a ring - a “donut”. For work, you need two identical blanks, for this, circle an already finished ring on cardboard and cut it out.
The rings are ready, you can go to the yarn. In order to make it easier to wind it, the thread itself needs to be cut into pieces about 1.5 or 2 meters long and folded several times.
Fold the two rings on top of each other and, holding the ends of the threads, start wrapping them around the workpiece. Perhaps there will be little cooked thread, then cut another piece and wind on top. You will need to wrap the threads in a circle until the pattern allows you to do this. When the threads are difficult to pass, use a crochet hook.
Finish the winding process when the inner circle becomes very small.
Now take the scissors and cut the yarn so that the scissors themselves fall between the rings. Cut all the threads along the contour of the workpiece. At this point, you can already see your pompom.
To prevent our work from breaking up, take a strong thread, pass it between cardboard blanks, pull it tightly and tie it in a knot. For fidelity, you can do this several times.
After that, cut the paper rings and remove them from the pompom. Done! It remains only to put it in order. Take your pompom by the tails and tap it on the table or on the palm of your hand (lightly). This must be done so that the threads are straightened and fluffed. All protruding threads need to be cut with scissors, giving the pompom a neat round shape.
The long threads with which you fixed the pompom can be left in order to attach it somewhere.
