The convenience of a headgear such as a hood can hardly be overestimated. This knitted product combines the functions of a hat and a scarf, helps protect the most vulnerable places (face and neck) from wind and frost, and also preserves the hair from deformation. The last point is important for many women and serves as the main motivation for deciding on knitting a hood.
Types of hoods
There are several varieties of this headgear:
- Short hood.
- Hood with a scarf.
- Bonnet.
Each of these species deserves attention, as it has its own purpose and specific features. Often, craftswomen use a mixture of several techniques in order to bind a hood. The knitting pattern in such cases includes a combination of solid or openwork patterns.
Simple hood
This type of headgear is extremely easy to knit. Its main part is based on a rectangle stitched on one side.
An experienced knitter will make such a hood (a knitting scheme can be absolutely any) literally in the evening. However, for the craftswoman, who is just starting to master knitting wisdom, this will serve as a good training.
The hood-hood for adults sometimes includes a wide lower bar, which plays the role of a collar. The decorative button clasp on this part looks good.
The knitting pattern of the hood-pipe can be selected at the discretion of the craftswoman.
A pipe is a specific circular scarf that can be worn on the head. Its detail is also a rectangle connected in a circle or stitched with one seam. Its width is usually about 70 cm, and the height should be at least 50 cm.
Knitting scarf: knitting pattern
The most comfortable and warm can be considered a hood equipped with a long scarf that can be wrapped around the neck. Such a product is best knitted from soft and thick yarn with a high content of wool, mohair or angora. However, you must carefully test the pre-made sample so that the material does not cause allergies. This requirement is especially relevant when choosing yarn for children's products.
There are two ways to make a scarf-hood. The knitting pattern must be solid and not contain openwork holes. An exception can be made when knitting the lower, decorative edges of the scarf.
The first method of manufacturing a scarf-hood
- On the knitting needles gain the number of loops necessary for knitting 25-30 cm of the fabric of the selected pattern. Referring to the scheme, the scarf is knitted to a height of at least 70 cm.
- Then, on one side, they get loops (to get an additional 10 cm of canvas) and work with a new number of loops. The height of this expanded part should be twice the height of the hood (30 cm x 2 = 60 cm).
- At the next stage, previously acquired loops are closed on the same side from which they had previously dialed (right or left).
- The remaining loops (25-30 cm) are knitted to the same height as the first end of the scarf.
If the pattern that the knitter chose for the bonnet cannot be used upside down, you need to knit two parts that mirror each other and then sew them together. In this case, the seam will be located on the top of the product.
There is a good simplified method with which it is quite easy to knit a hood. The knitting pattern is used to make a long wide fabric, which is then folded in half and sewn from the bend line by 25-30 cm. Its width cannot be less than 30 cm, and the length is calculated as follows: the length of the two ends of the scarf (75 cm x 2) plus double hood height (25-30 cm). Total about 2-2.1 m.
The second method of knitting a hood with a scarf
The next method consists in the manufacture of two rectangles and their elementary stitching.
When using this method, the total length of the scarf should be at least 1.5 m, the height and width of the hood were indicated in the previous paragraph.
The advantage of this method is its simplicity and accessibility for beginners. In addition, various patterns with braids, for example, such, will be very appropriate here.

How to make a baby hood
The hat for children depicted in the photograph is based on a rectangle sewn on one side.
This principle greatly simplifies the knitting of a child’s hood with knitting needles, a scheme in this case is not required, since a simple
facial surface is used. However, if desired, the craftswoman can use any pattern she likes.
Knitting process:
Type 65 stitches on the knitting needles.
- 1 edge, 2 front, 2 wrong, 60 front, 2 wrong, 2 facial, 1 edge (always wrong).
- Front rows knit, as the first, wrong - according to the drawing. Thus work to a height of 28 rows.
- 1 hem, 2 front, two purl, repeat to the end of the row (so knit 8 rows).
- Close the middle 60 loops of the canvas. Side 5 loops on one side and 5 on the other continue to knit to a height of 15 cm (these are the ties of the hood).
The resulting rectangle is sewn on the back. Ready hood can be supplemented with decor or left as such.
