Meaning of the word “head”
The Caucasian and Cossack shawl is usually sewn of thin cloth of white or black (less often red) color in the form of a square bag with 2 open sides and with long blades in the corners. The name of this garment from Turkic means "head", "on the head" or "at the head." Initially, the headpiece had a style without blades (often found in images of Scythian vases).

Bashlyk is an element of clothing that is widespread in Dagestan, Georgia, Ossetia, Kabardino-Balkaria, etc. At one time, it was an inseparable part of the entire Vainakh costume. And he rushed in any weather, serving as an excellent protection against rain, snow and wind.
Often shepherds used it as a bag for food, for carrying small lambs during lambing. During the sowing period, the farmers wore and used a bag for carrying seeds.
In addition to everyday use, the cap was also used as a decoration for men's costumes on holiday. A luxurious headpiece graced the groom as he rode for the bride.
Wear Methods
