The ridiculous word "chuni" means a very primitive thing - soft boots. Historians argue about where the name of this type of shoes came from: peasants and boyars, workers and intelligentsia wore all over Russia.
Sewing chuni with your own hands is easy. These boots can become your favorite home shoes or an original gift to a loved one.
A bit of history
All nationalities differ from each other even in the sphere of external attributes, such as, for example, shoes. A competent historian can determine at a glance where a particular pair of shoes and boots came to the museum exposition.
Chuni is a feature of the wardrobe of the poor layers of society in old Russia. Initially, it was wicker shoes - from hemp, bast. It was called differently in different regions, but it doesn’t change the essence of the matter - short shoes that protect your feet from cold and dust, but not from water and snow.
Initially, chuni was sewn from the remnants of fabric and cotton wool, thus obtaining shoes of different heights and shapes - from slippers to knee-high boots. Over time, chuni began to be made from sheepskin or fur. Rubber galoshes were worn on top of them to protect against moisture. Shoes turned out to be warm, dry, comfortable.
In some northern peoples, sewn chuni are considered national footwear. For example, ugg boots, which have become a world famous brand, are essentially Chuni peoples of the Scandinavian countries. To sew the chuni with your own hands, you can use a variety of patterns - ready-made or constructed independently according to the given sizes.
Design phase
In fact, the design and manufacture of shoes is a real skill, requiring many years of experience, vast knowledge. After all, the mood and well-being largely depends on comfort. If shoes and boots are uncomfortable, they press or rub their leg, then we can’t talk about a good mood.
Soft indoor boots are a different matter. It’s easy to sew the chuni with your own hands. Patterns of such shoes for children and adults can be used ready-made, or you can build them yourself without fear of mistakes, since there is nothing complicated in this process. Such shoes can be sewn from any material.
In order to independently build a sewing pattern for domestic shoes, sizes are needed. The easiest way to remove them is by placing your foot on a piece of paper on a hard surface and outlining the contours with a pencil. This is just the foundation. Now the circuit must be aligned by adding 1.0-1.5 centimeters along the contour. The result was a pattern of the sole.
To build the top, a boot will require a tailor's centimeter. They need to measure:
- the volume of the foot in the bone area of the thumb,
- the volume of the foot in the climb to the highest place,
- the volume of the foot at the ankle,
- height from floor to ankle.
Also, with a flexible centimeter, you need to measure the length of the contour obtained on the pattern of the foot. The base of the upper chuni is half the length of the foot pattern. Measure the height from the floor to the ankle up and set aside half the volume of the ankle. Then, from the lower edge, put up half the volume of the foot in the ascent and in the place of the bone also up - 1/2 of the measured volume. You should get such a part, which is also aligned along the contour by 1.0-1.5 centimeters, except for the sole line.
Pattern process
To sew comfortable chuni with your own hands, the patterns of each part must be appropriate to the size. It is best to cut and sew a sample probe from simple material according to the completed schemes. If the leg will freely pass into the boot, it will not stretch and warp anywhere, but will be comfortable, then the pattern is made correctly and you can proceed to the main cut.
A pattern of chuni from fur will be carried out in exactly the same way as a pattern of a boot from quilted material. If the chuni are double, the upper part should be slightly larger than the inside. The increase in the pattern will depend on the thickness of the outer material. For example, for sewing fleece boots, the pattern can be increased by only 3 mm along the contour. One boot will require 1 part of the sole and two parts of the upper part. With a cut, you definitely need to add 5-7 millimeters per seam.

Fur and Sheepskin - sewing rules
Pattern chuni from sheepskin - a simple matter. Sheepskin is a versatile material for sewing such a wardrobe item as home boots. Such shoes will keep warm in the winter and prevent your feet from sweating in the summer. Suitable for both adults and kids who are just learning to walk. And indoor boots always come in handy for everyone.
Sheepskin chuni is sewn most often by hand using a thick needle and strong thread with a seam outward. The seam, made of beautifully bright threads, will give the boots an elegant look.
When patterning chunai from fur, one peculiarity should be taken into account - the pile on all details should lie in one direction, for example, to the toe. If the seam is made on the wrong side, then it will need to be made flat by sewing to the main material with small stitches manually or sewing on a machine. The same applies to double boots. The resulting double seam should not interfere with the sock and look rough.
Beauty is important
Do-it-yourself high-quality pattern of chuni is the main thing, but it is equally important that slippers are also elegant, because they will create a mood. Chuni, from whatever material they were sewn, can be decorated in any way - from beads and braid to story pictures embroidered with a cross. You need to make jewelry on top of the boot or on the outside. It is best not to decorate the inside of the foot, as it undergoes friction and the pattern quickly deteriorates.
