Very often, when buying expensive jeans, we are faced with the problem of their length not matching our height. You can simply cut and hem them, as you do with regular trousers, but then you will lose a holistic look, because you will have to cut off the worn edge of the leg with the finishing stitch. How to hem jeans while maintaining a seam, and what is needed for this? First, during the fitting we will need tailor needles, matching threads, scissors and a sewing machine.
There are two options for shortening jeans :
- First you need a fitting, during which you need to measure the required length of jeans. Next, along the intended mark, draw a line and cut off the trouser leg 0.5 cm below the line.After we take the cut piece and cut off the excess at a distance of 0.7 mm from the decorative stitch. Now we unzip the line and remove all the threads, combine the trouser leg with a cut off scuff strip and sew 0.7 cm from the edge. Steam the seam and turn it down. After the seam is ironed, you need to make a lapel on the old folds and, having tucked the cuts from the inside, lay a new decorative stitch with jeans thread. Thus, all attritions will remain. The line, of course, should be machine, but if there is none, then manually hem jeans in this way will not succeed. The disadvantage of this method is too rough a seam, this is especially noticeable on dense fabrics. And if denim is thick, then the seam will look like cuffs, which is pretty ugly and unnatural.
- The next way, how to hem jeans while maintaining a seam, is not so laborious, but it also requires accuracy and diligence. So, first we measure the jeans and determine how long the legs we need. Above the mark 2.5 cm draw a line, turn the trousers on the front side and butt end to end pin the edge of the leg. We lay the line clearly along the bent edge, after which we cut off everything superfluous, leaving a slice of 1.5 cm. We process the slice with an overlock and steam it up.On the front side, along the fold of the sewn parts, we make a stitch with a fine pitch with a thread to match the fabric. So that the seam from the wrong side is not puffed, it can be glued to the leg with a special tape for bending the trousers. Using this option to shorten jeans, you can apply a linen or so-called seam-seam, then you can do without an overlock. However, the linen seam is only suitable for thin fabrics. This is a more common and easy way, as you can hem jeans while maintaining a seam even manually without a sewing machine.
It is worth noting that even with purchased trousers, the legs can be of different lengths, so, having noted the desired length, do not be lazy and compare both legs in the outer and inner seam, this can be done using a regular centimeter tape. The process does not take much time, but you can avoid a blunder and save your new jeans.
