From childhood, people hear about a granny. Who is she, where did she come from and why is everyone so afraid of her? What does a woman look like and does it really exist? Why are some afraid of her all their lives, and some do not feel fear at all? These and many other questions will be considered in the article.

Babai (in common people babayka) is a fictional night creature that kills children who do not want to sleep. It appeared like this: once someone told a terrible story to his child, in which he said that if he does not fall asleep, a terrible, bloodthirsty monster will come and take him with him. This worked, and the method began to spread, so that the babayka became more and more popular. In modern times, they continue to use it and tell naughty children about it.
Translated from the Tatar word "babai" means grandfather, therefore, most often a granny is represented in the form of an old terrible old man who can cause a lot of pain to everyone who has to face him. However, this is only one of the assumptions, since no one knows exactly what the babayka looks like. Moreover, more often than not, she is completely unlike a person in general and grandfather in particular.
Similar creatures
Babayka is more of a Russian creature. In other countries, children are scared by completely different characters who are no less interesting and curious. Some of them are provided below:
- Boogeyman. This character is used to intimidate children in most countries. You can see it in the film of the same name.
- Beech wood. This is the same Boogeyman, only a different name. Stephen King has a short story with a similar name. However, in the English version it reads like “The Boogeyman”, which shows the uniqueness with the previous name.
- Krampus. This creature came from Germany. This scary, horned and bestial beast abducts children who behaved badly on Christmas Eve. Krampus puts them in his big bag and carries them to his lair, where he eats.
Babayka - fiction or reality?
At first glance, of course, it seems that the character in question is not real. Nobody knows what a woman looks like, photos do not show anything concrete, only hints, assumptions, drawings, pictures and so on. Nevertheless, a sufficient number of people, mostly adults, believe in ghosts, poltergeist and UFOs (there are enough fantasy problems for children). Why? There is simply no evidence (namely, full-fledged) of their existence. And now we will not even mention God and religion, but this is all from the same opera: we believe in what we have never seen.
So, it’s impossible to answer unequivocally about the reality of the woman, so all that remains for people to do is listen to themselves. It doesn’t matter what they say, the main thing is what you believe in yourself. What do you feel? If you want to believe that a babayka exists, you do not have to convince yourself otherwise by looking at others. This is your truth, your point of view and your faith. If you think that there is no woman, then you have nothing to worry about. The maximum that can happen in such a case is that the creature decides to prove the opposite to you on one of the dark nights when you are left at home alone.
Children and babayka
The main category of people who sincerely believe and are afraid of the monster being discussed are children aged one to ten years. All because children are more impressionable and naive; often they take very seriously what their parents tell them. The latter, in turn, are happy to try: so that the child falls asleep as soon as possible, and also does not tear them out of Morpheus’s kingdom, that they will not tell him. The most common stories of parents are in the top, which should bite for a barrel, and in the notorious woman. After that, calm adults go to bed, leaving their children to the mercy of fears and questions. What does a babayka look like? Is it scary, and if so, how much? Why doesn’t she want the child to get out of bed? What happens if she crawls out of her shelter and attacks while the baby is sleeping? Of course, basically all these thoughts are spinning in children with extremely developed imagination.
By the way, most children believe in Santa Claus, Tooth Fairy, Mermaid and many other fairy-tale characters. However, if everyone knows approximately the appearance of the above-mentioned heroes, then no one knows about how a real woman looks like, including the parents themselves. And the unknown scares everyone, because fantasy is capable of presenting so many horrors that some have never dreamed of.
How to see a granny
The habitats of the creatures we are talking about are most often these: under the bed, in cabinets, in dark corners, in closets and in attics. There you have to look. Perhaps you will not see anything, perhaps it will seem to you that you have noticed something, or perhaps you will be lucky and you will find out what the babayka looks like. True, luck will be relative, because according to the legends, nothing good will come of the meeting. In addition, of course, you need to create a favorable atmosphere: to be at home alone, turn off the lights everywhere and walk around the rooms in search of a monster, either under the light of the moon looking through the windows or with a dim candle ready to go out at any moment.
Among other things, you can see the granny in films and cartoons, in pictures, in dreams and in the imagination. Naturally, this is not quite what everyone is counting on, but better than nothing at all.

So, we met with the woman and her “relatives”, and also learned that it is useless to try to find evidence of her existence. Anyone who actually encounters a mystical creature, especially the "dark" and evil, is unlikely to particularly spread about this. There may be several reasons for this:
- unwillingness to reveal such a terrible and terrible secret;
- fear that people will laugh, do not believe and consider it crazy;
- madness (after such a meeting, you can easily go crazy);
- death (witnesses are not only loved by criminal figures, so it’s unlikely that the devil’s creature wants to let go of a person after they meet).
