Craftswomen who own a hook have much greater capabilities compared to those who prefer exclusively knitting needles. To learn crochet skills, you need to learn very few techniques (literally three or four). However, their innumerable combinations allow designers and developers to create a huge number of patterns and ornaments.
Among the most interesting and useful elements are the front and back embossed column. Their use is not as widespread as usual, but also quite common.
What is embossed knitting
As the name implies, such columns differ from ordinary ones in their arrangement on the canvas. There are facial (LRS) and reverse relief elements (IRS). How to knit a front embossed column is depicted in great detail in the following diagram (in the first three figures).
- First, you need to perform the required number of VP for lifting (for SSN it is 3 VP).
- Then the yarn is performed.
- To get a loop for the formation of a column, the hook needs to be wound not under the upper "pigtails" of the column of the previous row, but always under the column itself.
- The loops formed are subsequently knit.
The resulting LRS looks convex.
The execution of the reverse relief column
IRS fits, on the contrary, drowned. Its implementation is depicted in the following three figures. A feature of this element is that the hook is turned on for the column, and not under it.

A similar ornament is often used to create an imitation of elastic. Outwardly, such a canvas really looks like an elastic band with 1: 1 knitting needles, but not so elastic.
Front embossed double crochet: applications
Most often, this element is used to design the lower edge of the product, as well as for cuffs of sleeves and pagolenok socks.
The pattern can be formed exclusively by LRS or in combination with IRS. In any case, the canvas is quite dense and tough.
Recently, ornaments formed by LRS made at an angle become more and more popular. For their knitting, the hook is turned on under the column of the previous rows, located on the right or left. An example is the following photo.
Here, the front embossed double crochet in combination with the RLS knitted for the distant "pigtail" forms a complex Celtic-style weave. Such a rectangular fragment is called a module. It is included in patterns for warm garments, bags, pillows, rugs, bedspreads, blankets and many other products. Most often, the front embossed column with a hook provides one crochet, but sometimes longer elements are required. Therefore, they may include two or more crochets.
Knitting children's hats with "elastic" from embossed columns
To ensure that the product does not turn out to be excessively stiff, you should choose soft yarn.
Wool or cotton with acrylic or rayon is best. The use of shaggy threads is undesirable, since the pile can cause irritation in the child, as well as get into the eyes and mouth.
The optimal thickness of the yarn is 300-400 m / 100 grams. Then for knitting you will need a hook number 3 or number 4.
Work begins with knitting a chain of 4 air loops (VP). Stages of creating a header (beginning of each row of 3 VPs):
- 12 double crochet (CCH).
- 1, 2 with a common base ( + ).
- 1, 1, + .
- 1, 1, 1, + .
If necessary, you can continue to expand the header in accordance with the specified principle. If the obtained diameter is enough, you can stop adding columns and continue to knit evenly.
- 60 CCH.
- Row 5 repeat 6 times.
- 1 LRS, 1 IRS.
- Row 7 repeat 5 times.
The finished hat can be tied in one row with a single prong or “crib step”. If we are talking about knitting a product for a girl, then it can be decorated with almost any decor: applications, knitted flowers, beads and other elements.
The described model is one of the simplest. By increasing the number of rows due to which the canvas expands, as well as extending the formation of a flat area, you can get the product you need the size, even for an adult.
