Gardening Secrets: Autumn Currant Transplant

currant transplant in autumn

For a long time, there have been disputes between gardeners about when currants should be transplanted - in autumn or spring. Some insist on a spring planting, basing their arguments on the fact that the young bush will have time to take root and even shoot. Others still recommend transplants in the fall when the plant has finished bearing and discarded all foliage. They explain this by the fact that over a long winter period the plant will rest and in early spring will give the first leaves and begin to bloom. In fairness, it is worth noting that the bushes planted both in spring and autumn, take root equally well. But in the spring, there is a lot of work on the site, and so sometimes there is simply no time left for landing.

Having determined the timing of transplantation of currants, it is necessary to start searching for the most favorable place for the bush. This should be a site well lit by the sun. Blackcurrant is an extremely heat-loving plant, so it does not tolerate dimming. It is better not to plant it near tall fruit trees and buildings.

currant transplant dates
If you plan to transplant currants in autumn, then you need to prepare the holes in advance. To do this, dig the earth and fertilize it with mineral and organic fertilizers. For this, humus, superphosphate, wood ash are used. So, the holes are made 2-3 weeks before the upcoming transplant. If you plan to plant nearby not one but several bushes, then you must remember that between them there must be a distance of at least one meter. The holes themselves are dug out with a width of 50 cm and a depth of 30-40 cm. But these are only approximate measurements. They can vary depending on the size of the bush itself and its root system.

When choosing a currant transplant time, it is necessary to take into account that the roots of this shrub are relatively shallow and very compact. Therefore, with severe frosts, the plant may die. When planting currants in the ground, you need to ensure that the suction roots are not higher than 30 cm from the surface. This will successfully feed the bushes, since trace elements will easily come to the roots.

currant transplant time
Currant transplantation in autumn should be accompanied by abundant watering. At least two buckets of water must be poured under each bush. On rainy days, stop watering. After the plant is in a new place, it will need to be cut (if it was not done before planting). During this procedure, damaged twigs are removed and twisted young stems are thinned out. All trimmed material is taken out of the area. This is due to the fact that many pathogens of fungal diseases of currants wait for the winter in organic residues under the bush.

After the currant has been transplanted in the fall, in spring the plant will bloom and bloom with renewed vigor. But the first year you need to carefully monitor so that the bush does not dry out, fertilize it regularly and, if possible, loosen the soil under it. The roots should receive not only water and minerals, but also have access to air.
