Those who learned to knit on their own are unlikely to know many terms that are directly related to this type of needlework. Of course, you can create knitted masterpieces without understanding the special designations, but for this, most likely, you need to have a special talent. But for those needlewomen who want to use the help of magazines and pages on the Internet in order to link any model, to know the terms and conventions is simply necessary. Otherwise, nothing will come of it. This article will discuss a concept such as rapport. What is it, you will understand when you read the article to the end.
What does rapport mean in knitting?
If you knit a product of the usual viscous type, such as the front surface or hosiery, then you will not come across the concept of "rapport". But when knitting in any pattern, knowing what it is is useful to you.
Simply put, rapport is the number of loops that need to be repeated throughout the entire width of the product, or the number of rows that also need to be repeated. To make it clearer, letβs explain using a simple example. Let's say you knit an elastic band. Everyone knows that it fits with the alternation of facial and wrong loops. So, rapport in knitting will correspond to the number of front and
back loops: when performing a 2 x 2 elastic, these are two front and two wrong. Total four loops, which we will repeat over the entire width of the gum. Agree that everything is quite simple.
Rapport and its designation in complex patterns
If you decide to knit a blouse with a beautiful openwork pattern, then for sure in the description you will find such words: "repeat rapport ...". Guided by the scheme, you can see the designation of rapport with square brackets or arrows. If you prefer a verbal description of the executed pattern, then repeating loops (rapport) will be marked with an asterisk. Almost always, a series begins with several loops that do not require subsequent repetition, followed by rapport (requiring repetition over the entire width of the product), then the final loops. Do not forget that the number of loops that you typed for knitting the product should be a multiple of the number of loops in the rapport. Only in this case the pattern will turn out uniform.
Each pattern has its own rapport. What is it, you now know. It happens that rapport includes a very large number of loops and is not repeated. In this case, it is necessary to calculate the loops before and after the rapport so that the pattern is in the center.
Vertical and horizontal rapport. What it is?
There are two types of this concept. This is a rapport of horizontal and vertical character. We have already considered the horizontal option above. Recall that this is a repeating number of loops to create a uniform pattern throughout the canvas.
But the vertical version provides for the repetition of a certain number of rows. Let's say you knit a pattern with a heart, as in the photo. The approximate height of this pattern is 15 rows. Having knitted these 15 rows, you will get a heart, but the height of the product is much larger, which means that these rows will have to be repeated more than once. These 15 rows, as a result of which the heart is tied, are the vertical rapport. If the reverse rows are knitted on the reverse or according to the figure, then they are not indicated in the diagram. Do not forget about it.
Crochet
Crochet rapport is basically the same as crocheting . It is displayed in the same way on the diagram (using square brackets). Its feature can only be the designation of rows. If in the pattern for the pattern made with knitting needles, the even-numbered rows are most often not indicated, since they have the same execution method (on the wrong side or according to the pattern), then when crocheting, all the rows are visible on the pattern, both even and odd. Therefore, before you begin, carefully study the scheme and note for yourself the most important points. For example, if you crochet not in a circle, but from right to left, and then from left to right, then at the beginning of the row you need to perform air loops in order to raise the height of the row. And here they are, just in rapport and are not included, they do not need to be repeated.
Useful tips for beginners
Careful consideration of the scheme guarantees you the perfect result. If you are a beginner needlewoman, then for the first works it is better to choose the most simple pattern and simple rapport. What it is and why it is needed is much easier to understand in practice than simply by studying theory. Therefore, boldly pick up a hook or knitting needles and start knitting. Do not be afraid to do something wrong. After all, as they say: "He who does nothing is not mistaken!" Of course, itβs unlikely that you can completely avoid mistakes, but you will gain invaluable experience. And this will be very useful to you in your future work.
We hope that from all of the above, you get the answer to your question and the concept of "rapport" now does not seem so frightening and incomprehensible to you. Inspiration to you and enjoyable in every way work!
