Then he leaves for St. Petersburg and enters the Ministry of Finance, the Foreign Trade Department as a translator. Ivan Alexandrovich was appointed Secretary of General Putyatin in 1852. And he goes on a journey with him for two and a half years. Then it lands on the shore of the Sea of ​​Okhotsk and travels all over Russia by land. From the very first day of the expedition, Goncharov keeps track notes. They are published first in separate fragments, then the collection of short stories Frigate Pallas, which is now called the novel, is published.

Returning from a trip, Ivan Alexandrovich enters the service of a censor. At that time, the attitude towards the people of this profession was very unattractive, and Goncharov soon left this work. However, in 1862 he returned as the editor-in-chief of the newspaper Severnaya Pochta, since he had to live on something. After some time, he is appointed Press Advisor, and he becomes the chief censor. He stands firmly in conservative positions, supports state foundations, because of which he quarrels with many like-minded people in literary craft. In 1867, Ivan Alexandrovich finally resigned and finished writing "Cliff" - his last novel.

In 1844, at the age of 30, Ivan Goncharov conceived the novel Ordinary History, and three years later he published in the journal Sovremennik.

In 1849, in March, Oblomov’s Dream was published in a literary collection with illustrations. In the same year, Goncharov went to Simbirsk and seriously thought about the novel. And only 10 years later, the Oblomov novel is published in Domestic Notes, divided into four numbers.

In 1869, the novel "Cliff" is published. On this, the chronological table of Goncharov as a writer can be completed. This will be his last major work. After that he will write only ā€œBetter late than neverā€ - an essay where he will explain all his creative successes and failures, how and why he wrote.
