Sedge is a grass that looks very similar to cereals. Only by looking closely, you can find the fundamental differences between them. They consist mainly in the fact that sedge is a grass that does not have a hollow stem and nodule thickenings. She has a triangular, not circular, section, and his whole core is filled.
Of course, in the fodder balance, sedge grass comes out only in third place, giving precedence to cereals and legumes. This is because hay, which is hard and rough in structure, is obtained from it, the composition of which does not differ in the rich content of salts, proteins and other feed elements. And the smell of this hay is not too pleasant - marshy. But this is only in the central zone of our country.
In nature, it is found everywhere, not excluding either deserts or tundra zones. In Russia alone, sedge is a grass with more than 500 species. In each geofence, it has its own advantages. In the tundra, sedge is grass, which animals eat all year round, because under the snow cover it lies in green. Ungulates dig it out and eat it in the cold season. They enjoy it in spring and summer.
The grass in question is especially valuable in the Ussuri region. Here sedge is rich in protein, so it is very useful for animals. Not stiff, but rather silky in the
steppe zones. In this area, the grass retains its beneficial properties in hot seasons. Desert species actively develop only in the spring, and then dry up and serve as
pasture for sheep and goats. Appetizing for the animal world are mountain sedges. But its bog species also have their value. After all, they are the basis of peat formation. And desert and steppe species also save surface soil from erosion. They perfectly fix the edges and slopes of the ravines, preventing them from sprawling. This grass and nests of
waterfowl are kept in swamps from ruin. After all, neither hunters nor predatory animals can pass through the screen of its hard leaves in bogs.
But in the decorative meaning of sedge - the grass is excellent. Many of its species are specially grown for the design of slopes and ravines. Such sedge is sold in deep containers. It is actively used in the creation of lawns and compositions decorating the zones of reservoirs and hills. It is important at the same time to choose not only the external, but also the botanical appearance of this herb.
There are also such types of it from which fibers for weaving are obtained. They make threads or a thin vine (depending on the properties). From time immemorial, upholstered furniture was stuffed with one of the varieties of sedge, the so-called hare grass. When dried, it becomes soft and silky. Furniture makers combed it and laid it in mattresses and sofas.
In ancient Egypt, a special type of plant was grown, from which wonderful writing material was made. The upper skin was removed from the long stalks of grass, which was glued together into long papyrus scrolls on which the priests wrote their texts. These texts are still preserved, although forty centuries have passed since their writing. Everything that is in nature has its value. And this fully applies to the sedge growing throughout the grass.
