The flag of Africa - the fight against colonialism

Africa is a continent that is in second place in terms of size and population. The continents do not have their own banners. There is no such thing as a flag of Africa.

On the vast territory of the "black continent" there are more than 50 states, each of which has its own flag. There is a conditional division of Africa into 4 parts - North, South, West and East. The regions also do not have their own banners. Among the continental and island countries of this continent, the overwhelming majority are states that gained independence at different times. The rest, in small numbers - colonies, protectorates or self-proclaimed republics, but they also have their own state flags. Such a flag of Africa, like the banner of the Islands of St. Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha, has on its panel, in the upper left corner (at the pole), an exact copy of the English banner, which indicates colonial dependence on this country.

The value of the main character of the country

As a rule, the flag of a country always contains symbols that speak of its history, origin or religion, which occupies a dominant position on its territory. But the main role of the storyteller is assigned to the color scheme, and the flags of African countries (if their photos are placed on one page) will surpass the most multicolor mosaics with their colors. It has even been noticed that there is no banner on which at least one of the shades of the Olympic rings is not present. Against the backdrop of the pan-African riot of flowers, only the banners of Libya, Mauritania and Nigeria look modest.

Special situation in South Africa

The number of tones and intricate forms of all surpassed the flag of South Africa, more precisely - the Republic of South Africa. It was approved immediately after the victory over apartheid - in 1994. 7000 works were submitted for the announced competition. The project won, in which, according to the jury, the past, present, and even the future of the country were reflected. The colors of the former state flags - white, red and blue - were preserved. To them were added the flag tones of the African National Congress, which put an end to the apartheid system (translated from African dialects - separation). And it was so deep that the ban on mixed marriages, adopted in 1949, seemed a trifle. The oppression of Africans by representatives of the white race, the number of which never exceeded 21% of the population, has always been carried out since the moment of colonization, but in 1948 segregation was fixed at the state level. The black population was driven into the reservation (bantustans) on a tribal basis, the territory of which they were forbidden to leave categorically. The flag of Africa, representing this apartheid state on the world stage, or rather, its colors were the basis for the new banner of the new state and symbolized the impossibility of returning to the past.

The past and future of Africa

There are many countries on the mainland with an interesting history, which is reflected in all the attributes of state power. One of the most tragic pages of the peoples of the "black continent" is the struggle against the colonialists. But in the 30-40s, a number of North African countries were occupied by fascist Italy with the goal of turning the Mediterranean Sea into inland waters (with the occupation of Abyssinia, the Nazis began to call it "our sea"). The fact of national liberation from the Italian invaders found a place on the banners of the North African countries. So, the African flag representing the Republic of Somalia, in gratitude for the help in overthrowing the invaders, borrowed the blue color from the UN banner.

The second largest continent of our planet is a "storehouse" of treasures. There is no mineral that would not contain Africa in large quantities. This is a promising area. In the near future, developing countries in Africa, such as South Africa (part of the BRICS countries), will take, like China, their corresponding place in the ranking of world economies.
