The village of Ust-Abakan arose in 1780. In the XIX century, after the introduction of the charter on the management of foreigners in 1822, the village was transformed into the center of the Kachin Steppe Duma, which is the self-governing body of the Khakasses. The center of Ust-Abakan volost (Minusinsk district of the Yenisei province) became a settlement in 1913.

Kashkulak cave

According to one legend, Bele arose at the battlefield between a giant bird and an ancient powerful hero.

Abakan Zoo
