Where did Vorskla (the river) come from?
Its history goes back to ancient times, when Scythians and Sarmatians lived on the territory of modern Ukraine and Russia. The very name of the river is first found in documents dated 1173. It is also seen in the Ipatiev Chronicle.
So where did the name of the Vorskla River come from? There are many versions about this. One researcher believes that the term "Vorskol" refers to the concept of frontier fortification, while "thief" at that time meant a fence or fence.
Another variant of the occurrence of hydronym comes from the Aors - representatives of the nationality that once was part of the Sarmatian tribe. A little later, the Turkic-speaking Kypchaks picked up this name. The second part of the “stake” in the Mongolian language means “valley” or simply “river”. That is why there is an opinion that the name came from the Türks, who at one time inhabited the area near the river.
There is another legend related to the origin of the name. The tsarina crossed the bridge on a carriage, and at that moment her glasses fell down. She said: "Thief skl" ("skl" - "glass" in Ukrainian). However, the legend has no documentary evidence, but this story is most often told to tourists by local residents.

It is advisable to start the rafting from Kirikovka. It can be reached by train from Sumy or Kharkov. The river valley in these places is swampy and gentle. There is a pine forest on its right bank , but it comes to water only twice for 20 kilometers.
Next come the coastal groves and floodplain
meadows. The river enters a canyon-like valley in front of Skelka. On its slopes are mixed forests, followed by a rapids with boulders and cliffs.
Below Vorkla, several tens of kilometers runs along the sandy shores, meadows are replaced by a pine forest. Approximately near Oposhni, she approaches the high slope, which goes already to Poltava. In front of the city on the right bank is the famous Poltava battle field, and on the river itself - a dam. It will require upgrades.
In the city, you can end the journey or start it down the river. If you wish, you can walk around Poltava and see its sights. A kilometer from the station is another dam. The shores in this area are dry and high, overgrown with sails and sedges.
Before Sanjary there will be a breakdown of the last dam at the recommended site. If you want to continue the journey further, then in Kobelyaki there will be three more. But if you plan to finish in Belik, then there is a railway station nearby, from which you can leave in the direction of Kharkov and other cities.
