What is edged beam?

Rare construction can do without the use of edged timber. This lumber has found quite wide application in shipbuilding, wooden housing construction and decoration. This material is a solid log cut from all sides, having a rectangular or square cross section and made of coniferous trees (such as pine, spruce, fir, larch).

Classification

Depending on the quality, the edged beam is divided into the first and second grade:

  • The first is processed lumber, which has no spots and knots.
  • The second grade is a product that has some defects.

Also, edged timber can be dry or natural humidity. Dry material is considered more in demand, as it significantly reduces the shrinkage rate of finished buildings. In addition, this material is lightweight, easy to operate and transport, much less susceptible to the formation of fungi and rot.

Edged timber can be processed in different ways:

  • Calibrated - completely dried and processed.
  • Two-edged - processed longitudinally from opposite two sides.
  • Three-edged - has three longitudinally processed surfaces.
  • Four-edged - processed from all 4 longitudinal sides.

The three-edged version is considered the most popular, since it allows you to create buildings that are attractive from the aesthetic side with a surface that is convenient for decorative finishing. On the outside, houses built from such a beam look like solid-wood, and the inner walls are smooth, suitable for any kind of decoration.

edged beam sizes

Edged beam: dimensions

The size of the edged beam can be as follows:

  • thickness - from 25 to 200 mm;
  • length - 3-6 m;
  • width ranging from 50 to 250 mm.

According to GOST, the width and thickness of the edged timber should be at least 100 mm. Everything that is thinner is called a bar.

Application

Bar - the most common type of lumber, having a very wide scope. It is used as a structural material in various wooden structures. With its help, floor beams, walls, various roofing systems, etc. are erected. In addition, this lumber has found quite wide application in the furniture industry and in the manufacture of carpentry.

In recent years, edged timber has gained particular popularity in wooden housing construction. Due to its environmental friendliness and manufacturability, it is very popular in the construction of load-bearing walls of houses, attic floors, etc.
