One of the main characters of the satirical poetic comedy A.S. Griboedova became Pavel Afanasevich Famusov. This is a representative of the Moscow nobility of the middle hand. Once he was married, but his wife died in childbirth, leaving him a daughter, Sophia. And now it is necessary to carefully consider the character of this hero in order to more fully reveal the theme of “Famusov: attitude towards service”.
Characteristic Famusov
He characterizes himself as an exemplary father, vigorous, fresh, a man who has survived to gray hair with a behavior similar to monastic. But the people around Famusov say differently. Daughter Sofya speaks very unflattering about her only parent: he is quick, restless and obtrusive. And his obsessive desire for intimacy with the servant Liza crosses out “ascetic” behavior. In secular society, they listen to his opinion and even value him. In general, Famusov is not an evil person, but now the most important and important issue for him is the search for a profitable party for Sophia.
Ranks and ranks
In fact, a very serious person - Famusov. Attitude to the service, however, he has a special. As befits a real nobleman, he is in the public service. But he does his work simply mechanically, absolutely not interested in its meaning. The best confirmation of this is his words, in which he expresses a desire so that a lot of things do not accumulate. Therefore, he often signs papers without reading. As he himself says: "Signed, so off the shoulders."
For Famusov, service is not some kind of personally useful activity for him, and not even a means of making money, and even more so, he is not guided by a desire to serve the Fatherland. Service for him is the main attribute of a real nobleman. He refers to the ranks and table of ranks with great reverence, by which he evaluates people.
Famusov. Attitude to the service. "Woe from Wit"
Famusov, in the case of communication with an important person, will necessarily indicate family ties. “Let us consider our own, even distant, to not share the inheritance.”
When revealing the topic “Attitude to Famusov’s Service,” the quotes speak for themselves. The hero loves to surround himself with distant relatives and tries to promote them in every possible way. He is not interested in whether a person can do this work or not. Here is an example quote: “No! I am in front of my relatives, where I will meet, crawling; I’ll find her at the bottom of the sea. ” Lisa says about Sophia’s father that he would like to have a son-in-law with ranks and stars - and no less. Famusov considers human learning to be a plague, from which there are eternal problems; he also believes that books are harmful and not needed at all, it would be better to burn them altogether.
Chatsky and Famusov
When Chatsky suddenly appears in Famusov’s house, the measured and ordered life of the whole family is disrupted, the owner is knocked out of the usual rut. For his own reassurance, Famusov is compiling a calendar. Marks are made there when there will be christening, a funeral or a dinner party for trout, where Famusov will certainly arrive. The attitude to Chatsky’s service is completely different. He became the personification of the emergence of a new, modern, educated and progressive person who opposes the old foundations, worship of ranks, serfdom and autocracy.
However, Famusov is not as limited as his entourage like Colonel Skalozub or the many-sided secretary Molchalin, as, indeed, are all the other guests invited to the evening. He has his own point of view on the processes taking place in society, and he tries to consistently protect it. He is a convinced serfman, and he is always ready for any transgression to send the offender to hard labor, to Siberia.
That's the whole Famusov. Chatsky’s attitude to the service is completely different, he left the civil service and declares that he would be happy to serve and be sick of sickness. Famusov answered: "... All of you are proud! Would you ask how your fathers did? Would you study, looking at the elders ...".
