Tummy, or, as this plant is also called, tan sumac, grows in the south in Russia, as well as in the Mediterranean countries and in the Crimea. You can see skumpiya in the Himalayas and on the southern slopes of the mountains in China. The plant feels great on soils containing even rocks, and therefore successfully grows in the mountains.
general description
Leather skump is a very branched shrub that can reach a height of 3 meters. Sometimes you can find scoopia, growing like a small tree with a neat rounded crown up to 5 meters in height. The bark of the scumpia is very decorative - grayish-brown, slightly flaky, and the shoots of the plant may be reddish in some varieties, which gives the scumpia even more decorative. The leaves, depending on the variety, can be simple with a thin stalk or jagged, ovoid. The main advantage of scoopia is small flowers, collected in large panicles, scattered over the crown. Flowering in the southern latitudes in one season can occur in this plant many times. The leather mackerel in the Moscow Region blooms in mid-June. The fruits of the plant ripen in late summer and are dry drupes.
Variety of varieties
In the culture, tanning skumpiya has been growing for a very long time and, it goes without saying that over the years many varieties and many forms have appeared. Since the last century, creeping squampia has been grown to strengthen slopes, as well as weeping and red-leaved for decorative purposes. One of the most spectacular varieties is green scumpia, ordinary, which looks great both in group and in single plantings in large gardens and parks. In our latitudes, scumpia can reach 4 meters in height, develops and blooms perfectly. The plant is not very hardy, but still tolerates the climate of even central Russia. Leather skumpiya has been successfully grown in the suburbs, transferring winter.

The shrub does not lose its decorative effect even after flowering, because thanks to the stalks, which are very long during fruiting and covered with bright red or white hairs, the scoopia looks very beautiful and elegant. Thanks to this, it seems that they put a wig on the plant or covered it with a bright cloud consisting of fluffs of reddish and pinkish shades. In this outfit, the tree remains from June until November, and in some regions until December. From here came the names of skumpiya, such as a wig or smoky tree. The foliage of the shrub with the arrival of the first autumn days also changes color and gradually towards the cold it turns crimson interspersed with bluish, orange and metallic tones. In autumn, scoopia becomes the most important decoration of the garden, because a bush or tree literally flares up and attracts attention with its bright color.
About Royal Purple and Young Lady
To date, the most common in European countries, leather skumpy royal royal, but, unfortunately, it is quite capricious. Very often this variety freezes to the height of the snow cover, and sometimes even to the very roots. Because of this, the royal purple tanning stump in our latitudes needs a strong pruning of shoots each spring, and it is most often grown in the form of shrubs. The foliage of this variety is very decorative - bright, with a reddish-brown tint, in the fall it acquires a bluish tint. Royal Purple is usually used for single landings, as well as in mixborders. Very often this variety is planted singly to set color accents in the garden. So that the skumpia tanning "royal ash" wintered well, it should be planted in protected places with high snow cover, and spud for the winter.

About a dozen varieties are grown in the culture, of which the most common are scoopia tanning "young lady", grace and purpureus. The main difference between the varieties is not in the flowers or in the shape and size of the bush, but in the color of the foliage. Foliage is very decorative in scumpia and in some varieties in autumn the leaves acquire an orange-red hue or become bright red.
Growing
For planting skumpy in a personal plot, you should choose a sunny place that is well heated and protected from the winds. If the shrub will grow on a site where there is little sun, then its shoots will not have time to lignify and therefore will freeze strongly during the winter cold.
This plant may come to terms with acidic soil, but alkalis or calcareous soils are preferred for skumpy. The earth should be airy, breathable, although this shrub well tolerates heavy soils. Sumpia is indispensable for strengthening slopes that are prone to water erosion, and the plant will develop well even on rocks. It should be noted that skumpia does not tolerate stagnation of water, and therefore, choosing a site for its planting, stagnation of spring melt water should be excluded.
Pruning
Does leather skumpy require much attention when growing? Care for this plant consists in the regular formation of a bush. Mackerel is an excellent ornamental plant for beginner gardeners, as it is almost not susceptible to diseases and pests. Trimming bushes annually, removing frozen shoots, as well as weak. Strong pruning of bushes is carried out every two years in late spring, but in the period before the leaves bloom. One-year growth with strong pruning should be shortened by 2/3. Old bushes of scoopia can be rejuvenated by cutting off the shoots โon a stumpโ. After such pruning, the bush will give a strong shoot and a young spherical crown will form, the leaves will develop well.
Mumps will delight you not only with its summer flowering. You can cut flowers, dry them and use them for winter bouquets. So that the delicate dry flowers of scumpia do not crumble, they can be sprayed with hair spray.
Breeding
Tanneries of tanning are propagated by seeds or vegetatively. Seeds should be sown in the spring, planting them in the soil to a depth of 2 cm. Seeds of scotia do not lose their germination for several years and have a laboratory germination of 35%.
For vegetative propagation of scoopia, cuttings or layering, shoots are used. Vegetatively propagating this plant is very easy and simple - they bend the branch to the ground, slightly cutting the bark on it, pin it with a wooden horn and sprinkle it with the ground. After root formation, the young plant can be separated from the mother and planted.
Cuttings must be harvested at the end of June. Cuttings are planted in a greenhouse, and in the initial period of rooting they must be very often watered or a fogger is placed in the greenhouse. Rooting lasts about three weeks. About a third of the planted cuttings are rooted.
Gardeners reviews
Try on your site or in the garden to cultivate a leather skumpy, which will certainly become your pride and favorite among garden plants. Bright outfit, unpretentiousness - all this makes this shrub a welcome inhabitant of any garden or park. According to the reviews of gardeners who have long successfully grown scumpia on their sites, it can be judged that this is a very unpretentious plant that does not require such painstaking daily care as a rose or lily. Your skumpiya will not need regular watering, except during periods of severe drought, and will ennoble your garden, make it rich and unusual.
Many summer residents and gardeners grow scampia precisely because of its autumn decorativeness and advise everyone who loves bright outfits of autumn nature to plant this plant on their site.
Growing difficulties
In its beauty and unusualness, mumps can argue with the recognized queen of the autumn ball - chrysanthemums, but it does not require such care and great attention. The only thing that can prevent this plant from being fully rejoiced is its rather low frost-resistant qualities. Many gardeners say that in colder regions, they need to cover the summit for the winter and sometimes do heavy pruning in the spring. Strong pruning every year can harm the plant and weaken flowering, and not every grower for this reason decides to plant a scoop.
