A wooden tray decorated using decoupage technique is extremely convenient and will certainly come in handy for anyone who likes to drink tea or coffee at the monitor. The practical benefits that this object brings are especially valuable because far from all needlework objects can boast such an advantage.
What do you need for work?
Depending on the desire of the craftswoman and the materials that are at her disposal, the wooden tray can be decorated with printouts, a decoupage card, rice paper or a napkin.
Materials and tools:
- The product itself (tray).
- Acrylic paints (white, gray, brown).
- Candle.
- Water, brushes, decoupage glue.
- Putty and putty knife (palette knife, stack for plasticine).
- Sandpaper (No. 320 for processing a wooden surface and smaller to sand varnish).
- Plain acrylic varnish.
- Craquelure for the formation of decorative cracks.
Getting started: preparatory phase
First of all, you should examine the wooden tray and identify all cracks, chips and other defects. If they are, then they must be filled with putty. To do this, use a pre-prepared flat object. In order to slightly reduce further cleaning, you need to carefully remove all excess putty from the surface.
In the next step, the wooden tray should be very well processed with sandpaper. Particular attention must be paid to those areas on which the fibers do not lie but puff. If they are left in this form, then they will be great to interfere with further work.
Primer and product background formation
Next, you need to soak the wood with a primer coat of paint or a solution of varnish and water.
This will save color paint, since the fibers will no longer absorb it intensively. After that, apply a layer of gray paint. This color will be visible through a light background.
To artificially age the tray, you need to wipe with a paraffin candle those places where scuffs will subsequently form. The paint will not lie on paraffin, which will give the product the appearance of a scratched one.
Then you need a wide brush rather casually apply white paint to the bottom and sides of the tray. To make the strokes coarse and distinct, the brush must be dry. In those places where the background should be thick and even, it is applied with a foam sponge.
The finished background should be well sanded. To better slip the napkin, you can apply a layer of varnish. Stick on the decor after the blank has completely dried.
Fixing the decoupage napkin
There are various methods for sticking napkins. In many ways, the technique depends on the strength and quality of this element. If there is a suspicion that the napkin will get wet in water, it can be treated with ordinary hair spray.
- Then you need to prepare a mixture of water with glue (1: 1), put a napkin on the file face down and pour the solution. With a wide, stiff brush, straighten all folds and air bubbles.
- Next, you need to quickly overlay the file with the picture on the decorated area of the product. It is very easy to level folds through plastic. In this case, you can not be afraid to damage or tear a napkin.
- When everything is straightened out, the file is removed and, if necessary, complete the alignment. Sometimes you can not do without folds. Do not be upset, because they can be removed after.
Shutdown
The dried-up drawing needs to be covered with several layers of varnish, and then clean the folds. If the torn edges of the napkin look ugly, they should be tinted and shaded with foam.
Applying diluted brown paint on top of the picture will help to make “old” wooden trays (photos illustrate this process).
Two-component craquelure varnish will help to get decorative cracks . First, apply one coat, and after drying, a second. The depth of the cracks depends on the thickness of the applied layers.
Such a varnish dries for a long time - a whole day. It is extremely important to withstand this period completely. Cracks can be tinted with dark oil paint (brown or gray), applied to the fabric and well rubbed on the surface.
After everything dries, it is necessary to cover the entire surface of the tray with several layers of varnish.
As a decorative effect, the handles can be wrapped with twine, this technique completes the decoupage of a wooden tray.
