The extension of the migration card to citizens of Ukraine, according to many foreigners, is necessary for further legal stay in the country if the migrant does not draw up other documents like RVP or residence permit.
Unfortunately, this is not true.
Purpose of filling out a migration card
A migration card is needed to enter information about a foreigner in the database of the Main Department of Internal Affairs of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the border service, as well as to control the duration of a migrant’s stay in the country.
The presence of a migration card is mandatory for all foreigners, except for citizens of Belarus and residents of the border zone, if in the future (this applies only to foreigners from border regions) they do not plan to leave their region and they already have a temporary residence permit or residence permit.
The card is needed for registration with the migration registration, for applying for a quota, for applying for a patent, RVP and residence permit, as well as obtaining temporary registration for RVP and residence permit.
Validity
The migration card does not have strict and clear expiration dates. It is valid for as long as a foreigner is allowed to stay in the country without a patent, RVP or residence permit, i.e. up to 90 days or for the duration of your visa, if you are from a visa country.
Where to get a migration card?
The document is issued at the checkpoint by customs officers, crew or sea vessels, train conductors or a bus driver, depending on your vehicle and the way you cross the border.
The card is issued at the request of the migrant. If the checkpoint officer did not issue you a card, it is your fault, not his. You can ask for a migration card or ask your staff where to get it.
It makes no sense to look for a migration card form before the trip, since the card is double-sided and is issued only at the checkpoint.
Document Cost
Migration card is issued free of charge. If at the checkpoint everyone was given a form for free, and you are asked to pay for it, do not be lazy and contact the checkpoint employee. Usually, cards do not end at customs.

The personal data, the purpose of the visit, the length of stay in the country, the city to which you are heading, or the full address where you will live, are entered in the document.

Card renewal
Please note that the migration card does not give a foreigner the right to work in the country. This is a document for entry and stay in Russia. From it begins your path to the status of RVP, residence permit or citizenship. A card will also be needed to apply for a patent, which, in turn, allows direct work activities.
In addition, within 7 days a foreigner is required to register with the migration department of the Main Department of Internal Affairs of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and in Moscow or Kazan within one day. Migration registration among foreigners can be considered a “registration” or “registration”, but without the status of a RVP or residence permit, it is not. Registration for RVP and residence permit is called "temporary". Permanent registration or “registration” can only be for citizens of the Russian Federation.
How to extend the migration card if its validity is about to expire, but in Russia you still have some things to do? Extension of a migration card to citizens of Ukraine in the Russian Federation is impossible and pointless. The procedure for crossing the checkpoint in order to obtain a new migration card and extend your right to stay in the country for a longer period is illegal.
An extension of a migration card to Ukrainian citizens at regular border crossings is not an extension and in fact does not give them the right to stay in the country if the migrant does not have one of the possible statuses. However, in the presence of such a status, the extension of the migration card to citizens of Ukraine is not necessary.
Extension of the migration card in the Crimea is also impossible.
If a PPC officer did not grab your hand and let you into Russia, this does not mean that you are not breaking the law and you are allowed to enter the country. Just a ban on entry has not yet been issued to you. When he is discharged, you will not be able to enter the country from 3 to 10 years, depending on how long you violate the permissible length of stay without any status.
Permitted stay in the country only with a migration card
For citizens of Ukraine, as well as for citizens of other visa-free countries, the 90 regime is applied through 90. This means that being in the country for 90 days, the migrant must leave the country for the same period. A longer stay in the country is allowed only to persons with a patent, RVP or residence permit. Only after a foreigner has been outside Russia for 90 days can he return for the same period.
How to extend the period of stay in the country?
To extend your stay in the Russian Federation, it is not enough just to cross the checkpoint and get a new card. If you act within the framework of the law and are registered with the migration authorities within 7 days, you can renew it. To do this, within 90 days you must receive a RVP, residence permit or a patent for work (it must be obtained within 30 days). If the status is obtained, all documents for extending the migration card, or rather for migration registration, must be brought to the Main Department of Internal Affairs of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and your stay will be officially prolonged.
To extend the migration registration you will need:
applicant's documents:
- passport;
- migration card;
- a patent, a stamp on the RVP in the passport or residence permit in the form of a book or passport;
- completed application for migration registration.
documents of the receiving party:
- passport of the homeowner;
- document confirming the right to use real estate (certificate of ownership, contract of sale).
An extension of migration registration for persons with a temporary residence permit or residence permit will be needed only if there is no temporary registration for 3 and 5 years. It will have to be renewed every 90 days.
Until recently, migration registration was extended to all residents of Donbass without any status in the country. Also, the extension of the migration card in Crimea in the form of an extension of migration registration was possible only for residents of these territories. Today the situation has changed, and in the absence of any law that would oblige the police department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs to extend the registration of residents of military territories, the registration can be extended at the discretion of the management of the Central Department of Internal Affairs of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Accordingly, not all regions go towards Donbass immigrants without status.
