The Russian city of Obninsk is called the first science city in the state. And here everything corresponds to this name: sights (Obninsk), names of various institutions, the coat of arms of the city. So, one of the local shops is called “Radium”, and on the facade of the plant Einstein’s formula is depicted, but on the coat of arms of the village there is an atom symbol. It was in this city for the first time in the world that a nuclear power plant began to function. But this is not all that Obninsk is able to surprise: its incredibly stunning cultural objects deserve attention.
The whole city in one house
The Museum of the History of the City is the place from which it is worth starting to consider the sights. Obninsk received this facility in 1965. Then the whole event was based solely on a voluntary basis. And already in 1992, the museum moved to a building that was built specifically for him. It was at this moment that the attraction received a second life: the exposition of the institution expanded, the museum received at its disposal a whole exhibition hall.
The collection of the institution has about 50 thousand exhibits, which also have the right to bear the title of attraction. Obninsk gives every tourist the opportunity to enjoy the contemplation of these objects. The exposition opens with familiarization with the halls dedicated to the history of the area. Here are tools, cult objects that scientists found during excavations near the city, stone weapons, clay dishes and other exhibits.
Visitors to the historical museum also have the opportunity to get acquainted with the main occupations and life of the inhabitants of the surrounding villages, with their peasant folk costumes. Among the items on display are religious religious items, various textbooks, the rarest icon of St. Mitrophany and an ink device from a parish school.
Scientist cat
In any city, it is imperative to find interesting, nowhere else sights. Obninsk possesses this, and this is a sculpture called "Scientist Cat." A monument was erected near the right front corner of the House of Scientists. The impetus for the construction of the monument was a centennial oak growing near the same house. At first, the city authorities even wanted to mount the monument on this tree, “planting” the cat on a gold chain. But the decision was not implemented, since the work on establishing the monument could harm the oak root system.
So, in 2013, a cat, popular in the city, appeared on the corner of the House of Scientists. It looks like this: a fat animal is dressed in an academic cap and a jacket. The animal is entirely focused on science. With its paws, it holds the attributes of science.
Nuclear power plant
Sights of Obninsk, photos of which are presented in the article, are also the first nuclear power plant on the planet. The facility was launched in 1954. Then at the station only one channel uranium-graphite reactor with a water coolant was equipped. Feinberg and Kurchatov put forward the idea of creating an active zone of the station. The reactor was launched by Krasin and Dubovsky. And Kurchatov led the process.
Besides the fact that the reactor generated energy, it was also a springboard for various experiments. Today the station is not in operation. Having successfully worked for 48 years, the reactor was shut off at the end of April 2002.
Meteorological mast in Obninsk
The sights of Obninsk, the photos and descriptions of which we offer, cannot be imagined without a meteorological mast. It was put into effect in 1959 and was called VMM-310. The object is made of steel and has a silver-gray tint. The mast height reaches 310 meters, and the diameter is 2.3 meters. Four balls of braces hold the mast. Radiological and meteorological instruments are located on 13 platforms with masts, which are further advanced. A weather site is provided next to the mast. In the middle of the mast itself is equipped with an elevator, which is used to service equipment and carry out experiments.
The mast helps to measure temperature and humidity, wind speed and direction, optical and turbulent readings, atmospheric pressure.
Monument to the outstanding scientist
Sights of Obninsk and its environs have many monuments to famous personalities. One of these monuments is a sculpture depicting Igor Vasilyevich Kurchatov. Sculpture is an image of the world famous nuclear physicist, cast in bronze. On Triangular Square, a long time before the monument was erected, a stone was laid with an engraving indicating the place for the future sculpture. But here, due to the intricacy of sculpting, it was impossible to locate the attraction. Therefore, a sculpture was installed on Kurchatov Street.
Unofficial Dracula Castle
Sights of Obninsk and its environs also have modern facilities - Dracula's castle is one of them. This is not a real estate of a famous Count, but a microdistrict in which a residential complex in a modern style and buildings of the Soviet Union are connected. On the sides of the buildings are "wings", as they are called. The castle with its appearance resembles a popular Romanian object. Therefore, the attraction has the aforementioned name.
If you climb the weather tower and look at the castle from there, you can distinguish three houses resembling sixes near. Too superstitious residents are afraid to buy housing in this complex. Under the strict guidance of the architect involved in the construction of Dracula's castle, several more residential buildings were built in Obninsk.
