A devoted and loyal friend of a famous professor escorted him to the station every morning and met him in the evening. Once an irreparable happened, and the professor died right at the university. The dog did not wait for the owner, although it was at the station until midnight. The dog returned to the house, and the next morning again went to the station. This continued for a long nine years, until the four-legged friend died. Admirers of his immense fidelity raised funds and erected a monument to Hachiko on them. Now he is always at Shibuya station and is still peering into the distance, trying to see his master.
Dogs of this breed, which are champions and prize-winners of various events, are depicted on commemorative postage stamps in Japan. There is even a law that guarantees all champions who have lost their owner a lifelong maintenance by the state. For a long time these animals were not allowed to be exported from the country. In rare cases, the royal family could present the puppy to prominent politicians in other countries. In the post-war era, Akita became the subject of smuggling. Animals were illegally transported abroad, not observing the rules of transportation. As a result, many of them died on the way. The government was forced to lift the export ban.
