History of bilateral relations
Permanent diplomatic communication between the two countries was established in 1992. That same year, South African President Frederick Willem de Klerk visited Russia. Since then, the South African embassy in Russia has been very active in representing the interests of its state in the Russian Federation.
Like other embassies, the South African is developing bilateral relations in the fields of trade, science, education and culture. The consular service is engaged in legalization of documents, registration of South African citizens permanently residing in Russia, as well as notarized translations and registration of non-tourist visas. In addition, the embassy promotes bilateral academic exchange. And also in Moscow there is a permanent business council representing the interests of South African business in the Russian Federation.

The Permanent Diplomatic Representation of the Republic of South Africa (Embassy of South Africa in Moscow) is also located on Presnya, at 1 Granatny Lane, building 9. Russia and South Africa are among the countries participating in the BRICS international organization, which means that cooperation between the countries is established not only at the highest strategic level, but also at the level of ministers who regularly interact on tactical issues.
Being the most developed state of the continent, the South African Republic has long become a strategically economically important partner of the Russian Federation. In 2012, trade between countries reached $ 965 million. This may seem like a rather modest result, but it hides truly breathtaking growth prospects, because South Africa contains huge reserves of gold, oil, diamonds and nickel.
