New building
As we have already said, the construction began in 2005, that is, immediately after the approval of the project by the management of the company and the holding of a competition for construction. The need to build a new building is due to the small area of the old building and the inability to place new copies in it, which constantly replenish the museum today. The competition received more than 150 architectural projects. The construction was carried out by the Viennese company Delugan Meissl Associated Architects (Delugan Meissl). The building itself has a modern architectural style, which in its appearance echoes the Porsche development philosophy.
The foundation work and the construction of the central part of the building were completed already at the beginning of 2007, and at the end of the same year a powerful steel structure was erected, which is support for the exhibition hall. The area of the exhibition hall is an impressive 5600 square meters. Two more years were spent on the final work. Initially, the opening of the museum was scheduled for late 2008, but later it was moved to the beginning of 2009.
It is worth noting that the new museum building was built to replace the old one. Some people mistakenly believe that there are two Porsche museums in Stuttgart. We repeat, saying that today in Stuttgart there is only one Porsche museum. This is a new building built in 2009, which replaced the museum building in 1976.
