Gypsum Chipboards (GSP) - what is it?

Sheet and plate materials for facing external and internal walls, floors, ceilings, partitions are used in almost every residential or public building under construction. New offers are constantly appearing on the market.

SHG, what is it?

SHG - what does this mean, how does this material differ from other similar ones, what are the features of its application?

Very simple components

The concept, technology and equipment for the production of gypsum boards were first developed in Germany. It was there that always paid attention to environmental friendliness and reasonable economy. It is these two concepts that formed the basis for the production and use of SHGs. That this material consists of two very simple components is clear from the name.

SHG cooker

Natural wood waste in the form of wood chips and shavings account for 82% of the total SHG volume. Chipboard due to the larger size of the constituent particles has a higher strength than fibrous. In GVL (gypsum fiber sheets) and fiberboard (wood fiber boards), the base is fluff pulp, often recycled waste paper, which has less reinforcing properties. Larger wood particles, compressed with a cementitious compound, determine the best performance properties of gypsum chipboard.

GSP gypsum plates

The binder used for these sheets is one of the most environmentally friendly and affordable - gypsum. It has been used in construction since the time of Ancient Egypt. Its volume fraction is 15%.

Clear technology

Plasterboard (GSP) is produced without the use of complex physical and chemical processes. Water (2% of the total mass) is added to the mixture of wood and gypsum, a semi-dry mass is poured onto metal sheets and pressed to the desired thickness. Hardening and drying take place naturally, in the absence of high temperatures.

The plant, located near the gypsum deposit in Peshalani in the Nizhny Novgorod Region, is today the main producer of SHGs. That this determines a very reasonable price is quite logical. The use of modern equipment guarantees high quality products, the main parameter of which is the stable geometry of the plate.

Types and assortment

The size of the produced sheets is optimized for use along with other types of plate materials. GSP plate is made with a thickness of 8, 10, 12 mm, length: 0.5, 1.5, 2.5, 3 m, width: 1.25 m. In addition to the standard, a moisture-resistant GSP is produced, in which standard water-repellent substances are added to the binder.

SHG - what is

Sheets of half and one and a half meter length are conveniently used for the device of "dry coupler" on the floor. Slabs with a thickness of 8 and 10 mm can be sanded, that is, having a better surface for subsequent gluing and lamination without prior preparation.

Comparison of board materials
Gypsum chipboard

The physicomechanical characteristics of GSP express its main advantages in comparison with other sheet materials. With comparable values for sound insulation, heat resistance and many other qualities, it performs better protective functions than gypsum plasterboard and drywall. By strength, the gypsum chipboard is second only to DSP and glass magnesite, but much cheaper than them. Although the low cost of SHGs is a rather relative concept.

Benefits

This material is, as it were, specially made for fans of green building technologies. It is difficult to find material more natural in composition. No toxic adhesives, formaldehyde resins, no harmful impregnations are included in the SHG. What does this mean? It can be safely used for the construction of the "cleanest" structures, for the decoration of kindergartens, schools, hospitals, sanatoriums, etc. The composition of the gypsum particle sheet allows it to be also a means of regulating indoor air humidity. Excess water vapor is absorbed by gypsum and wood, which makes the microclimate more comfortable.

SHG - what is it

Good qualities of heat and sound insulation, fire safety. But the main thing that distinguishes SHGs is that such a wall framework coating is much stronger than the usual drywall. A gypsum chip sheet cannot be pierced with the same ease as gypsum plaster, even if you mount the wall or partition in one layer. Screws or other fasteners can be easily screwed into such a wall to hang shelves, lamps or other interior elements. Its strength is similar to chipboard, but, of course, chemically safer for humans.

An obvious advantage is the very good surface of the wall, which does not require expensive and time-consuming preparation for finishing. If it is possible not to damage the “face” of the plate during transportation and installation, you can immediately paste wallpaper or film, apply a decorative colorful layer. It is possible to pre-veneer GSP (like wood-particle and melamine boards), while the structural material can acquire the quality of decorative panels.

The most convenient material for "dry screed"

For the installation of floors are increasingly using the technology of "dry screed" using SHG. What is it? A photo with instructions will help even a layman to understand the process and the main advantages of the technology. A film is covered on the ceiling and a layer of loose heat insulation of a small fraction (usually expanded clay) is poured. Then, at least two layers of SHG are laid on a surface leveled by beacons (it is more convenient to use slabs 0.5-1.5 m long), the layers are glued with PVA glue and additionally connected with screws. Naturally, it is necessary to avoid coincidence of the seams of the upper and lower layers.

SHG what's that, photo

The use of SHG sheets is more economically justified than the use of special tongue-and-groove plates. The absence of a large amount of “wet work” saves time and money, and the “cake” obtained with this method holds heat well and does not conduct extraneous sounds.

disadvantages

The main disadvantage is the inconvenience in working with SHGs. What it is? First of all - a lot of weight. A 3-meter sheet with a thickness of 12 mm weighs more than 56 kg, which means that it is impossible to avoid difficulties during unloading, during installation, especially when climbing to a height. The ceiling is clearly more convenient to veneer with thinner sheets.

Gypsum chips are not processed sugar, it is difficult to cut, plan, drill. For a circular saw, you need to use carbide tipped blades, you can use a jigsaw, but you will have to change the files more often than usual. Cutting with a grinder is faster, but at the same time such dust rises that in a small room this will become a serious problem.

Conclusion

Gypsum particle board is the best option when performing some designs, in particular, “dry screed” for floors. SHG is a material for those who attach importance to the absence of harmful emissions into the atmosphere of living rooms, the strength of walls made using frame technology. It is for those who are not afraid to spend extra effort.
