Belinsky Park in Penza is one of the largest in this city. Its area is about 370 hectares. Moreover, it is considered one of the oldest in Russia.
Park history
Belinsky Park in Penza appeared before the revolution. It was created in 1821, thanks to the decree of the then acting emperor Alexander I. The ruler of the Russian state then ordered that there be a park in every provincial city.
To execute this decree, the Penza governor Fedor Lubyanovsky asked the famous gardener Ernst Magzig, who worked at the local government school, for help. He came to Russia a year before from Germany.
Together they chose a site that adjoined the forest. In Penza, he was known as Shipin-bor. Lubyanovsky passed it to the city and organized a clearing of the forest. They arranged picturesque alleys, gazebos for rest and benches for guests. During the first 15 years, about 15,000 rubles were allocated for the improvement of the park.
At the very beginning, it was called "Public Garden". And when the Summer Theater was built there in 1875, it was renamed the Summer Theater. Belinsky Park in Penza got its current name in 1911. This year Russia celebrated the centenary of the birth of the famous literary critic Vissarion Belinsky. A monument to critics and a memorial gate with its bas-relief were erected in the park.
Park in the Soviet years
In Soviet times, a park was preserved at this place. In the late 60s, he was even considered one of the best in cultural services to the population. In 1958, he became the winner of the All-Russian competition.
A significant role in the development of Belinsky Park in Penza was played by Ivan Dmitrievich Balalaev, who in 1969 took the post of director. He led the park until 2000. During this time, he published a series of articles and books on Belinsky Park in Penza. Also, noticeable help was provided by the chairman of the Penza city executive committee in the 60-80s, Alexander Shcherbakov and the secretary of the regional committee, Georgy Myasnikov.
