English bush roses are considered perhaps the most beautiful ornamental plants of all grown in suburban areas. There are many varieties of these flowers. And most were bred by English breeder David Austin. One of his most spectacular and popular roses is Jubilee Celebration.
A bit of history
The Latin name for this variety is Jubilee Celebration. He was introduced to culture in the UK in 2002. This spray rose was named after the 50th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II. The main goal of David Austin has always been the cultivation of ideal and at the same time quite unpretentious shrub roses that can grow on any soil. And in most cases he succeeded. Almost all varieties he received, including the Jubilee Celebration rose, do not require any special care.
Jubilee Celebration Flowers
This variety is appreciated among lovers of ornamental plants primarily for its originality. Terry flowers "Jubilee Celebration" have a very nice warm salmon-pink color. At the same time, the shade of their petals is golden. Such coloring gives them a truly unique appearance.
In diameter, Jubilee Celebration flowers, abundantly covering the bush, can reach 9–12 cm. Due to the huge number of petals, they look a bit like dahlias. Shrub rose flowers of this variety are not only unusually beautiful, but also very pleasantly smell of fruits and strawberries. The leaves of Jubilee Celebration are dark green, semi-glossy, medium in size. This rose belongs to the group of varieties of repeated flowering. This means that its buds can open several times during the summer.
Biological features of the variety
Actually, the Jubilee Celebration rose itself usually reaches a height of 120 cm. The width of the bush is almost the same. Therefore, this sprawling variety with shoots curved in an arc looks very harmonious. Like all bush roses, Jubilee Celebration prefers sunny places and slightly acidic soil. In order for the plant to look neat, it needs to be cut from time to time.
To grow this variety, since it belongs to winter-hardy, it is possible, including in the middle zone of Russia. In severe cold sprigs of this rose sometimes freeze. However, this has almost no effect on the general health of the plant. In the spring, the Jubilee Celebration rose leaves very quickly and releases many new shoots to replace the frozen ones.
Diseases and Pests
The undoubted advantage of this variety in comparison with many others is its resistance to various infections. However, the Jubilee Celebration rose, especially with improper care, of course, can. So that the plant does not become infected, it should be watered with exclusively fresh (but, of course, warm) water. Stagnant, and especially marsh, liquid is completely unsuitable for this purpose. After all, it is absolutely certain that various kinds of pathogenic bacteria in such water contain a huge amount.
In addition, so that the rose does not get sick, it is worth trimming it in time, and in the fall carefully scrub the fallen leaves from under the bush and burn it or put it in a compost heap.
Of course, jubilee celeration can also hit diverse garden pests. First of all, this is a spider mite and aphids. In order to protect the plant from such insects, at the beginning of the season it should be sprayed twice (with a break of several weeks) with the infusion of garlic, tobacco or, for example, a weak aqueous solution of dichlorvos.
Where are they planting?
This variety is used in suburban areas, of course, exclusively as a decorative one. The “Jubilee Celebration” rose is planted (photos clearly demonstrate its unusual beauty), like any other English bush, usually in the background of flower beds or along fences. In warm regions, this plant can be used even as a hedge.
In any case, the place for this rose, as already mentioned, should be chosen sunny - in the shade of its shoots begin to stretch very much. In addition, flowering will not be so plentiful. The sun should illuminate this variety at least 6 hours a day.
It is necessary to plant the acquired roses either on a hill, or out of the blue. Lowlands for scrub varieties, which include jubilee celebrity, do not categorically fit. In the spring, after the snow melts, the roots of a rose planted in such a place will surely be shed.
What should be the soil?
The Jubilee Celebration rose, described above, can be planted both in spring and autumn. Almost any soil is suitable for it. But best of all, the variety still feels on fertile loams. The soil mixture for these roses is usually prepared as follows:
- fertile garden land - 1 part;
- peat - 1 part;
- bone meal - 3 handfuls.
The resulting mixture is poured to the bottom of the pit and the roots of the rose are lowered there. When planting, you must ensure that the vaccination site is 2–5 cm below ground level. At the final stage, the pit is covered with soil to the top and a hole is placed around the bush for watering.
How do pruning varieties?
There are no exact rules governing the formation of crowns of English spray roses. You can trim the “jubilee celebrity” as you like, if only in the end the plant looked attractive and neat. That is why Austin's “jubilee celebrity” roses are great for creating hedges.
Of course, during pruning, all frozen and diseased shoots must be removed. Also, twigs growing inside the bush are removed from English bush roses. Pruning should begin in the spring immediately after buds begin to swell at the bottom of the bush.
Care Features
It is relatively easy to cultivate the Jubilee Celebration variety. Caring for him, like any other garden plants, consists mainly of three procedures: weeding, top dressing and watering. Fertilizers for such a rose are usually applied before flowering. In this case, products containing a large amount of nitrogen are used. Actually, in the flowering period itself, it is advisable to feed the bush with some phosphorus composition.
Potash fertilizers are what the rose responds very well to. “Jubilee Celebration” variety can be fed with such compounds at any time. Very good for English bush roses is the professional fertilizer ASB Greenworld. It should be applied under the bushes once every three months.
You need to water the roses as the soil dries under them (about once a week). It is not necessary to pour too much water into the trunk circle. The fact is that due to waterlogging, this rose can begin to dry out and die off shoots. One and a half bucket of water will be enough for one bush at a time. In any case, you need to ensure that the root ball is completely wet. Some time after watering, the soil under the rose should be loosened, while removing weeds.
Do I need to cover it?
In the warm regions of our country, the bush rose "jubilee celebration" winters well and without any actions from the gardener. In the middle zone of Russia, this variety is better to be harbored in autumn. All roses, even winter-hardy, can freeze in the cold climate of our country without additional protection in winter. Bush in this regard are no exception.
Most often, the Jubilee Celebration rose is covered by the following technology:
- The bush is covered with mulch (slide) with a height of 20-30 cm. The diameter of such an insulating “pillow” should be about 50 cm. As a mulch, you can use, for example, compost or sawdust.
- After the spud freezes slightly, a layer of leaves or straw (also 20-30 cm thick) should be placed on top of it.
In this way, you can quite reliably protect the rose from frost. Sometimes summer residents to protect the bush also arrange around it a wire frame and tighten it with foil. Inside the resulting structure, it is advisable to sprinkle sawdust or compost. In the spring, the frame is removed immediately after the snow melts. If this is not done, the roots of the plant may begin to rot.
