It has long been forgotten the times when street lighting was provided by poles with oil lamps that were lit in the evening by lamplights. Today, this tradition is carried over to various performances. It brings, rather, some diversity than practical benefits. Modern street lamps (lanterns) are high-tech devices that provide sufficient illumination of the sidewalk and roadway in the dark.
This not only made the cities safer, but also allowed to decorate each street with a string of lights. In addition, modern landscape designers skillfully use lights of various shapes and sizes to transform the garden and to place accents on the site in the dark.
The most important task facing outdoor lighting designers is the choice of materials. Lampposts can be made in a wide variety of options.
However, each such design will have different properties. This fact must be taken into account, since in different situations individual requirements may be stated, the failure of which may lead to the collapse of the structure.
The first lampposts were made of wood, since it was this material that was widely distributed in construction and easily accessible. In addition, a significant height of these structures was not required - a lantern was easy to get to the tanks with oil and a burner. However, at the same time, they should not have interfered with passing crews. The main disadvantage of these structures was their low ability to withstand environmental influences.
Over the past several decades, lampposts have been made of concrete. Of course, over time, the brands of this material improved, which had a positive effect on the quality characteristics. Nevertheless, the main indicators changed slightly, which allows us to summarize the data and talk about the material as a whole. It is durable and resistant to many environmental factors. Products from it have a long service life. The disadvantages include significant weight and considerable cost. Lampposts made of concrete have a porous structure, therefore, remain subject to the influence of fungi and mold.

Currently, street lighting is performed using all modern developments and materials. An excellent example of manufacturability can be aluminum or steel poles. The metal structure is quite light and strong, and most importantly - safe. While the fall of the concrete base in a collision will fall on the car of the unlucky driver with all its weight, street lamps and lamps on a metal base, so to speak, will go around the car. Such technology saved more than one person from death, which only proves its effectiveness in such cases. It should be noted that for other characteristics, these products are not inferior to concrete.
