Leveling rail: its varieties and scope

The leveling rail is an additional tool that allows you to perform geodetic work in construction, as well as used in geological or topographic studies.

Using it, the differences in elevation of the terrain are recorded. The leveling rail is a rectangular plane with a scale placed on it, which is plotted with a certain division price.

Varieties

There are four types of this device:

  • wooden rail with the possibility of folding;
  • telescopic;
  • fiberglass lath;
  • high precision invar.

Description

Modern products can be produced for digital and conventional levels. Digital slats are used for levels capable of reading BAR codes that are applied to the surface of this device. Using such devices, the distance to the device and the height difference are determined. Also, these devices have the usual graduation on the back, as a result of which they can be used as simple levels.

  • The leveling rail made of wood is folded in the center. The length of each section is approximately 1.5 meters. Wooden slats are heavier than telescopic. But they have a more reliable folding mechanism compared to the specified analogue, which has a backlash in the mechanism lock button. Such a leveling rod is a dielectric. This is true when working near open wires and high voltage power lines.
  • The telescopic leveling rail in modern design is made of light materials, such as plastic or aluminum, which is very convenient to use due to its low weight. They have a round level, which makes it possible to put this device strictly vertically. Often used slats having a length of 3, 4 and 5 m. When folded, they have a length of not more than 1.5 meters. The scale on such products is plotted on both sides (on one is a millimeter scale for close work, and on the other in the form of checkers for use over long distances).
  • Fiberglass rail is used in working with a digital level. Like all of the above devices, it has two-sided marking. On the one hand, like an ordinary level, on the other, a metric scale. Such a rail is made of a dielectric material called fiberglass. Therefore, it can be used near high voltage power lines.
  • Invar rails are used to perform high-precision terrain surveys. Here, the accuracy of determining the marks is not more than one millimeter. Its body is made of wood and covered with Invar tape. These slats are 3 m long. Due to their ease of use and light weight, they are in great demand.

Now you know what leveling rails can be. How to use it is known to topographers, cartographers, builders, miners. However, everyone can learn this skill. Sometimes another name for this device is used - a construction rail, or geodetic. The price of such a product depends on its size and accuracy of divisions.
